You can choose any color for background or text on Mantano.
You do this by editing the theme you use.

Mantano Reader Premium 2.2 restricted Beta available

Dear All,

Sorry to join the discussion in a somehow disconnected way, but we may have an interesting update for those of you who have purchased the Premium version.

As you may know, we are working very hard to constantly improve our software. We've been quiet silent for a while, but we have been working on a new version which aims at providing an improved reading experience:
  • We have added the long-awaited page curl effect for EPUBs, and 2-pages view in landscape mode
  • The PDF reading now provides 3 different modes:
  • Horizontal scroll (with fast fling)
  • Vertical scroll. In this mode, the page width automatically adjusts to fit the device display width
  • Automatic: this mode automatically selects between each of the Horizontal or Vertical scroll, depending on the device orientation (vertical scroll for landscape mode, horizontal scroll for portrait mode)

Besides this, we have added new "underscore" and "strikethrough" operations on a selection, and simplified the interaction on these selections. The application remembers the previous tool used (select / highlight / underline / strikethrough), so you can easily do many similar operations in sequence without selecting the tool. This part is still a little bit unstable, and you may have surprises when you try to modify an existing highlight for example.

The following features are not yet reconnected or are still instable in PDF documents:
  • Magnifying glass: NOT YET RECONNECTED
  • Crop: NOT YET RECONNECTED
  • Reflow: NOT YET RECONNECTED
  • Highlight selection: UNSTABLE
  • Swipe gesture for brightness adjustment: NOT YET RECONNECTED

We have noticed on one of our Android 2.1 devices that EPUB files do not open. We are interested in any feedback on Android 2.1 devices.

We know that our application has to run smoothly and that it's important to provide safe updates. We want to make sure that the next release will be tested on a very large set of devices, and we have decided to publish a Beta version for the upcoming 2.2 release. It is available only to the Mantano Reader Premium users, since it contains the whole set of features of the Premium edition.

It is available on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...r.android.beta.

We also know that many of you are waiting for a more convenient dictionary support. The current user interface requires too much clicks to access a definition. This will be done in the next release, not in this one - after all, we have to separate concerns, or we'll never publish any update :-)

We hope you will enjoy, and thank you again for your trust in our application !

Best regards,

Jean-Marie

Hi Jean-Marie.

The issue where I can't open files is happening on three devices, all with different versions of Android (Samsung Galexy Tab with 2.1, HTC Desire HD with 2.3.5 & HTC One X with 4.0.3). The same files fail on all three, so far I've only found this from books bought from either Baen or Book on Board. I can supply you with sample copies if you need them.

The BoB books were originally DRMed but I've stripped that out, but the Baen books are DRM-free. The are stored in a SugarSync folder.

I've tried opening then in Sigil and saving them, converting them epub-to-epub in Calibre but none of those seem to make a difference.

It has reached the point where I've now started to convert them to mobi files and opening them in Kindle for Android, a situation I'd rather not be in.

As to you site login, I've finally managed to get on a PC that I can view the login buttons ousing Firefox, but the other browsers on it fail to show the buttons. Clicking on the Google button and then entering my login details results in a failure ("The connection was interrupted" error message).

Other than this, I need to use a social network login. This represents a problem as I don't use social networking sites, I imagine I'm not the only one who doesn't use them. Luckly enough I had an old Facebook login from when I created an account to have a look at it (it was still live as I testeed it first on thier site), and I got the same error when attempting to log in.

Mantano is still my favourite ebook reader for Android but if I can't open my files or log into you site when I have a problem, I'm not likely to continue to support it.

I'll try out the beta and see if it resolves my epub opening issue (I've paid for Matano so I'm able to use it).

If you want a copy of those files PM me with the email address you want me to send them to.

Yes please, this would be a great help. Or if you prefer, you can also install the aLogcat app and use it to send us a copy of your device's log. As usual we ensure that your books will be kept strictly confidential.

I just tried the Google login and I had the same problem. It is related to the plugin that we are using for authentification. We've just contacted the technical support, and we'll try to get this fixed asap.

Beyond this, we are very aware of the paramount importance of having a reliable and smooth helpdesk/community website. We are investigating robust solutions and this is one of our current priorities.

Yes, please give it a try. It may solve your problem (not sure), since we have slightly modified the way we open a book (it's now faster).

Thanks for the quick response on this.

I've checked the site and can now see the login options on all my browsers and can now login with the google button.

I've also mailed you the files as well.

I've now checked if these books work on the new beta and they fail there as well.

Shame. I'll just have to wait for this to get fixed.

Beta problems

Could not turn off animation
Could not turn off page numbering
Could not turn off bottom right TOC
Horizontal margins not working properly.
In two page mode tapped right side and went several chapters down.
I stopped testing there.
I am running ICS 4.0.4

Regards - John

Hello Jaby,

Thanks a lot for your feedback. We will add a setting to turn off the animation and page numbering in the final version. Thanks to your comment, the bottom right button can now be turned off in the Beta 2 that we will publish very shortly.
We are working on the margin cropping, we have to finish integrating it into the new code base.
Again, thanks a lot, and I hope that you will enjoy the final 2.2 official release.
Best regards,

Jean-Marie

As I mentioned in a recent post, my main problem with Mantano is the inability to scroll or resize illustrations and pictures in EPUBs. Is this fixed in the new version? I haven't installed the beta version to try it.

Jean-Marie - thanks for the reply.

I am looking forward to the new version. The new treatment of the two column mode is looking good and will be very useful to me.

Are you still planning to make the TOC page and the home page (book shelf?) more readable to us old guys?

I'm seeing a problem with TTS with ePub: it often flips to the last page of a chapter before starting to read. Haven't done this a lot so I don't know if this broke recently.

Since this original problem I have
- done a factory reset and returned my tab to stock honeycomb
- re-installed Mantano to ensure it was working without problem
- re-applied the OTA official Samsung update to ICS
- installed Mantano again
and once again I am stuck with the 'press back once more to exit' loop. I have also installed the beta version and have the same thing happening with it.

I have reported this via the support section on the mantano website (and found someone else with the same problem) so it will hopefully it will be looked at sometime soon.

Installed it.

I read the animation can't be turned off right now, but I most certainly hope I will be able to in release, because I never understood why we must have that antiquated page curling on an electronic device. And I can't stand it.

I set page number on top, yet it shows on the bottom. It also clashes horribly with the background. I'd prefer it having the same colour as my text and the same background (instead of white on black)

Also, the page number is shown over the text (honeycomb bar pushes it upwards). I have the same in the current version of Mantano, which is why I turned it off. (margins are 5 all around)

A last thing, please, please, please, please, please, let me turn off that fake book background. It's eating screen real-estate. I read from an electronic device, and as I mentioned at the start, I don't want to read a fake paper book. So, that means no fake pages on the right side of the screen neither.

I put two screenshots up, the first is from the current Mantano, the second from the beta. Settings (except colours) are the same:
Font: default
Line height: 1.2
Text alignment: default
Margins: 10

Yet with the original version of Mantano, my lines are slightly longer and I find easier to read.
