Pros:
If you buy books from Kobo then it provides a simple way to backup/restore purchases.

Cons:
- Takes 80Mb hard disk real estate (perhaps not a major thesedays but is unnecessary if it's used purely to populate the Sqllite database).
- Forces advertising/recommendations onto your reader
- Gathers personal reading metrics
- Forces latest firmware updates (which we have seen is not necessarily a "good thing".)

If you don't buy kepubs, don't bother.
Just grab the latest firmware from a direct link (some kind soul usually posts on the forum) and use something like SQLite manager to populate the 5 fields in the user table. That way you have the freedom to pick and choose what & when you add to your reader (inc updates) without being snooped on.

For the most part, I like the update. However, returning to the home screen from anywhere (lists, books, anything) is EXTREMELY slow and often leads to restarts. More random restarts in general too.

Had the same problem (as in the last version) where the touch screen stops responding. I was reading, tapped to turn a page, the dictionary pops-up, and the touch screens stops responding. Hitting the main button brings me to the home screen, but touch screen still doesn't work.

Power down, power up, and all my books are gone except two (but there are three on the main screen that I didn't load. ) Goto the library, and only my two books are listed. Plug it into the PC, start up Calibre, and all my books are listed. Transfer a new book over using Calibre, and get a Calibre error. Disconnect, the kobo does it's processing thing, and looks like all my books are back. Plug it back in, start up Calibre, and get a device communication error.

Now it looks like whenever I use Calibre to access the device, I get a communication error (and I'm using an old version of Calibre, pre version checking, I think). It looks like transferring works, I just get a error message every time.

I guess it times for my bi-weekly factory reset?

Yes, that's true :-|
I've had many restart when playing with the new font rendering options.

Had another crash. All my books are gone. Doing the factory reset. Owning a Kobo is so exciting, you never know what is going to happen next.

I too had this problem where I tapped to turn a page and the dictionary popped up, and then the screen stopped responding completely. Surprised me.

A power off/power on toggle fixed the problem (note I only use and load kepubs from Kobo web site).

This has occurred twice since vers 2.0.0

My wife has seen this a few times; I tend not too. One big difference is I have my unit set to sleep after 15 and power off after 60; she has hers set to never power off.

I think the issue is a memory or other resource leak on the Kobo.

I used to have the screen freeze issue but since 2.0 hasn't happened.....I've probably jinxed myself now though! I also have mine set to sleep after 15 and power off after 60min.

I've posted before about various v2 related issues so i won't go back over it. One major issue which i've had no resolution about is that since the update my wifi has not worked. I have wifi enabled but it is utterly unable to connect. I've tried deleting my home wireless setting and rescanning then trying to reconnect but it just cannot go online. I've tried it in other wifi areas but to no avail. It gets busy for a long time then finally says 'cannot connect'. For what reason? I have tried every option, I know i am using the correct password. I know i have wireless working (laptop is using it right now). Has anyone else had this problem? I'd rather download and browse on my laptop anyway so it is not killing me but there have been several occasions where i've wanted to download a book directly but cannot - so it is annoying.
Secondly, and of far less importance, I tend to have a bunch of books on the go and read whichever i feel like at any given time. Since the update, the kobo is not good at using the correct cover for sleep or off mode display. In short, it displays the wrong cover. Most often the previous book i was reading before whatever i closed the kobo on.
I wrote an email to the contact service and days later recieved a response that had nothing to do with my enquiry and was clearly meant for someone else. I hope the people employed to work on the update are working hard and with more competency.

I hate it. But then, I usually use highlighting a word to get to the selection handles to annotate a line and add it to bookmarks. Which is now a much more convoluted method. And not intuitive.

I take it you mean you tried it on another network other than your own home network and it didn't work there either? If that's the case, short of doing a factory reset and seeing if that helps, I'd have to call it hardware failure and need to send it back under warranty.

This is a known issue with sideloaded books and I would assume this is being worked on.

This unfortunately is also a known issue and I won't even speculate on it ever getting fixed. While the reply might have appeared to be meant for someone else (and might even have been an answer to a problem someone else was having), my experience with e-mail support is that you are as likely to get a random answer as one that has any relation to what you wrote (i.e. the answer you got was probably not actually directed to someone else but accidentally sent to you).

I have no idea. To the best of my knowledge I don't have an ePub with an embedded font. If you can point me to one, I'll try it. Make sure you tell me what font is being used and were in the book so that I can attempt to compare it to the non-embedded font.

Making update work.

Thank you for signing-out advice for shelves etc after update! I was having the same problem with shelves just not being created but sign-out worked a treat. I had no problems with any books or anything really when I signed back in, kobo epubs or side-loaded either. Happy Kobo customer!
