So, a quick question from me then. This is a question that we had in a quiz I attended on Sunday in a round entitled, 'Show Business'. One of my friends at the quiz said that if the answer I gave was correct, she'd buy me a drink! It was correct

What is a 'swazzle' used for?

Well a 'swizzle stick' is used to stir said drink, so is a 'swazzle' related to drinking?

I know! And am desperately trying to remember where I read about it ... it was in a British mystery .... it was a clue! Anyone know what the book was? It's driving me crazy!

Oh .... the answer ... it's the thingee puppeteers put into their mouth to produce the Punch & Judy voices .... right?

What was that book? Or short story? The detective found & recognized the item ....

That's my understanding too. I've heard I said that one isn't a true Punch & Judy man until one has swallowed a swazzle (by accident, of course).

Spoiler: I think one needs to be older than 50 to have a chance at this. There are some modern references, but I would have done better if one song had actually made it to the English Settlement recording.
