Silicon Valley Says Step Away From the Device!
Hands up, Step away from the Device Sir!
Remain motionless! This means you! "Tech firms are uneasy over the effect time online has on relationships. By MATT RICHTEL Published: July 23, 2012 NY Times" ![]() "Stuart Crabb, a director in the executive offices of Facebook, naturally likes to extol the extraordinary benefits of computers and smartphones. But like a growing number of technology leaders, he offers a warning: log off once in a while, and put them down. In a place where technology is seen as an all-powerful answer, it is increasingly being seen as too powerful, even addictive." More to read Too much reading, watching videos, playing games, snooping around on the net may be bad for your health, your work performance and your social life. "Who would have thought?" True. I think being constantly connected has become an integral part of having a modern social life. Heck if I look at my nieces they are constantly on their cellphones, even when they have friends sitting next to them!

When my father has had enough of us being glued to an online device he will shut the WiFi server down. It works because we know he won't turn it back on for at least a few hours so we have to actually do something in a real life social sense. At mealtimes we have to put phones and tablets into Airplane mode. Luckily I only visit on weekends but my siblings who still live at home have to put up with it all week.

Back in the Atkins/Food Combining/South Beach fad diet battles there was a guy...
He had a big white beard and had not finished Medical School and wrote a book on healthy living/eating. One of his interesting chapters was about doing an "Information Fast". His assertion is that TV, newspapers, magazines, the internet, music, etc., was all designed to stimulate you, to rile you up, to gain your attention. Weeks, months of this constant stimulation can over-whelm you, silently. His suggestion was that for a weekend you turn off the TV, don't read magazines or newspapers or use the computer. You can listen to ... classical or jazz music but that's it. Just take the 2 days to cook, exercise, do something with a spouse or kids, garden, paint a room, etc. I did this one weekend, and it was hard. But on Monday I actually enjoyed going to work and plugging back in. I did not miss anything important. I remember having to turn off the cable box at my house during the week because the daughters were rushing through their homework to watch TV (and doing a crappy job). They had gotten into the 'tv habit'. I forced them to pick the 2-3 shows we all liked each night, we recorded them and sat down on Friday evening to watch the shows. So I suspect we have all gotten into the 'information habit'. A lot of the stuff we do on-line - is not really all that important. But it has crept up on us and we have become quietly addicted. |

I'm an internet addict and I get angry at myself for it but its hard to stop. I sit here all night mindlessly refreshing the same sites and boards, then I get angry at myself for not getting any reading done when its time to go to bed.
In reality, all of my internet business can be conducted in 10 minutes. But that 10 minutes magically transforms into 10 hours. |
