Pretty much this. Yes, 50 Shades, and a lot of erotic romance, is probably targeted at (and mostly read by) adult women, and 50 Shades in particular isn't hardcore porn, but I really don't like the stereotyping that underlies the term "mommy porn." For one thing, using "mommy" in this way feels diminutive, and not in an affectionate way.

I wonder if they'll do up the titles to be like some of the *ahem* "adult video" titles.

As I mentioned in the other thread in this subject here, the publisher behind this enterprise is Total-e-Bound and they've been publishing erotic romance titles since 2007 (I believe). Erotic romance was around, and profitable for many digital first publishers and authors, long before 50 Shades was even a concept in the author's mind. E.L. James certainly didn't invent the genre.
As for eroticized versions of the classics - Adams Media did it first with Wuthering Heights in late 2010 and Pride and Prejudice in January 2012. Not everything is a riff on 50 Shades. What has changed since that book came out, however, is the media attention now paid to all things related to erotic fiction for women. Adams Media didn't get this type of attention for their eroticized versions of literary classics when they did it first. I will say, though, that as a soon-to-be-published author with Total-e-Bound (with an original work, not a reworking of a classic) I think all this publicity can only be a good thing. ![]() No, they won't. It's my understanding that the books will contain the original literary text and keep its title, but contain supplementary material. Last edited by Suzanna; 07-19-2012 at 03:31 PM. |

It isn't plagiarism. These works are legal derivative works based upon public domain works. Plagiarism is to pass off someone else's work as if it is your own. These books credit both the original author and the author of the new work. They don't pass it off as the original.

If the work is in the public domain, you don't need to appeal to fair use, you can do anything you want with it. Pride and Puppies, where all the characters are recast as adorable puppies? Go right ahead. Recast it it in a leper colony? Totally fine.
