You're correct, but the mere fact that you cannot manage collections from Calibre is a problem for some (i.e. people with a lot of books).

As long as you keep your collections up-to-date as you add books, it's not a problem (IMHO). The Kindle's built-in collection-management tools work well enough, to my mind.

Since the 5.1 update (which added back the 'type' filters lost when Collections first showed up on Kindle 2: All/Books/Periodicals/Docs/Active Content) I've completely stopped using Collections (except for one to store Kindle Owner Lending Library book samples which functions as a KOLL 'wish list'). I've got hundreds of items, and it is easy to find any them by setting the appropriate filter and using the Go To feature (tap the 'n of m' label). Much easier than spending time navigating and maintaining collections IMO. I sort by Most Recent and the Home page always shows the content I'm actively reading, so usually just pressing Home gets me to the next thing I want to read right away. YMMV of course.

I've never came across a nicer unit than the K3. I've tried and/or returned a K4, T1, Kobo Touch and Kindle Touch. I picked up another K3 off of eBay for backup.

I would go with the keyboard model. I have a nook simple touch and love it. But I returned my kindle touch due to inadvertent chapter skips. It was way aggravating to tap for page turn and it jumps to the next chapter. Back paging to find where you left off really annoyed me. I never had the problem with my nook simple touch. I returned the kindle touch. Still read on my keyboard and DX. |

I have had chapter jumps with my Kindle Keyboard. It doesn't happen all the time, which makes me think it might be the book, but it is not 100% reproducible on the chapters, so that doesn't make much sense. Sometimes going forward skips a chapter but going backwards does not. This just started happening within the last 4 months or so and it is pretty random. Not sure if it is a hardware problem that is coming up slowly or a software issue. I have never tried the touch, but I love the page turn buttons on my KK. k4k |

bad experience with Kobo Touch - no support LinuxMint 13 64-bit and... after hours of searching for fixes, screen became unresponsive... going in for a refund... should I invest in a Kindle Touch? When you say LinuxMint 13 compatability, is that out of the box? at Amazon registration? Kobo only seems to work after registering it and getting the desktop... advice appreciated.

I prefer Keyboard over Touch. When I use Keyboard, I keep my fingers on the page turn buttons: turn or not turn pages. When I used touch, I rested fingers on frame, moved fingers onto screen to turn pages -- it bugged me. The easy access of dictionary was Touch's advantage.

It has arrived! That only took almost a month... but today my Kindle Touch arrived with FedEx delivery. I've unpacked it and it's charging through it's ugly white USB cable now, and once that's done I will add it to my amazon account and make sure all my books go on it properly. First impressions: Small screen. Feels good to hold. Not a fingerprint magnet. Good contrast on the screen, if the "I am now charging and you can't use me until I'm done"-message is anything to go by. Defaults to USB mode, very, very good, I like that. I will read on it later, after all charging and other things are done, and see how that goes. everyone who posted and helped me decide. |

In fact, if you only want to read, and all your books are from Amazon, then you don't even need a computer at all. Are you saying that the Kobo requires some kind of (presumably) Windows application to even be able to use it? | |
