So, what's your budget and what do you need/want to do with your new laptop?

The one I just canceled was from Costco.com 320 gh hard drive, 4 gb memory, 2.1 processor. Dell 1525. $999.99 including shipping and microsoft office 7, go here......

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...Nty=1&Sp=S&s=1

what do I want to do?

Download as many books as I can, with media massaging options. (legal)
Run Quilting software.
Catalog pictures.
Play a DVD if I want'
Play a CD if I want (I have to be the only person on the planet without a mp3)
surf the heck out of the net.

Your suggestions?

Having it include both Word and Excel is great and the price is good as well. I have the 1420 (in Spring Green), which is 1 inch smaller at 14 inches and did not come with that software package.

I purchases it with Vista but I made it a dual book machine with XP.

I'll be back, I going to see how much it would cost to build something comparable.

While I'm building, note that you can also dual boot (so you can practice/play with Vista) or change it to XP, if you're willing to buy a copy of XP.

Okay, I can't get close to the sale price. The components for the build it yourself model are slightly different and by the time I get to the warranty and software, I'm way over the sale price.

How old is your quilting software?

Its new, EQ6. Takes 700mb of hard disk space.

I'm not worried about getting another. I figure the way the economy is going, prices will drop even further as we get full into the 'back to college' and then Christmas season. And if they don't, Ce la Vie! (not sure about the spelling there......

It looks like EQ6 likes Vista. As time passes it gets harder and harder to find an XP loaded machine.

I just checked, HP and Gateway... no XP machines. Bestbuy has the Asus Eee with XP Home for $499 but you won't have your Red or a CD/DVD drive.

So eventually I"ll have to break down and use vista. But not right now. As long as I can post from this laptop, even with no sound and slow to boot, can't ask for much more........And thanks for the research you've done.

When I was helping my partner to buy a laptop in the UK earlier this year we found that it was virtually impossible to get computers loaded with XP in retail outlets.
However, he ended up buying one via his university and managed to find one with XP. I'm told that business users can also get them. So it may be worth asking friends and family to see whether they can buy suitable laptops for you via their workplace, college or business.

No flames here. I'm dual booting Win@K and WinXP, and planned to add Linux to the mix till I ran into some nasty hardware problems. I still plan to add Linux, but not till I'm sure the machine is stable. (Looks like I need a new power supply, for starters: I don't like it when a PC spontaneously shuts off. )

I have no plans to move to Vista. The only thing I've seen so far in Vista I don't have in XP is NTFS support for true symbolic links. I can (and do) do hard links, but those can't span file systems. For that, you need symlinks.
