Just finished The Rising Tide by Jeff Shaara. Excellent non-fiction (well mostly non) account of WWII in North Africa and Sicily.
Next up: The Winner by David Baldacci |

Dana Stabenow and David Weber
Finished Dana Stabenow's The Singing of the Dead, #11 in the Kate Shugak series. Excellent, and just makes me want to read right on through to the next one. But I need to space them out a bit.
Time to read something completely different--David Weber's Oath of Swords, the first book in the Bahzell Bahnakson fantasy series. This series seems to have been mostly forgotten, and never sold as well as Weber's other books such as the Honor Harrington series. But it has been recommended, strongly, so I'm going to give it a try. Last edited by CRussel; 07-22-2012 at 09:55 AM. Reason: Fixed title |

Finished listening to Princeps by L. E. Modesitt, Jr., read by William Dufries. Now I know I'd never be able to read these books as eBooks, there's just way too many lengthy passages that are boring beyond belief. But somehow, these books work well as audio books, and I enjoyed this one quite a bit. Princeps is the middle book in the prequel series for the Imager Portfolio, so very much NOT the place to start reading these books. But if you've gotten this far in the series, then by all means continue.

Bernard Cornwell - "Sharpe's Sword".
The book is about the Battle of Salamanca, Spain, during the Napoleonic wars. This year is the 200th anniversary of the Battle. You can't beat Cornwell for historical action. What I love about his books is that you never know which character is real, not until you read the Bibliography at the back of the book. I love to guess which character was actually there. Cornwell writes like he was actually right in the middle of the action! |

I'm in the middle of an old pbook reread of The Hunger Games by Suzane Collins. I have forgotten just enough that the story keeps me turning the pages.

"Final Curtain" by Ngaio Marsh
"Final Curtain" is the 14th book in the Inspector Alleyn series, and was published in 1947.
Agatha Troy, Alleyn's artist wife, is commissioned to paint a portrait of Sir Henry Ancred, a bad tempered elderly actor who is the head of a large and (as in so many of Marsh's novels) eccentric family. When Sir Henry dies, apparently of food poisoning, suspicions of murder are aroused, and Alleyn, newly returned from 3 years in New Zealand during the war, becomes involved. I wasn't terribly impressed by the two books before this in the series, both of which were set in New Zealand during WWII, but this book really returns to the high standard set by many of the earlier books in the series. It has interesting characters, and a very ingenious plot with a good few red herrings thrown in for good measure. It was good to see Alleyn's sidekick, Inspector Fox, in a story again; his down-to-earth manner is a nice contrast to Alleyn. I recommend this book. Well worth reading. |

I have read the Sharpe Books three times over the years and will continue to do so. Bernard Cornwell is the best in his Genre. I have not disliked any of his books that I have read.
I am just starting Black Diamond by Martin Walker. I picked up the first of this series, Bruno Chief of Police, at the recommendations in an earlier thread. I loved it so much I bought the others and am reading them in order. Black Diamond is the third in the series. The fifth in the series, The Devil's Cave, is due out in August and I will be buying it too. Apache |

I'm stretching Captain Vorpatril's Alliance as much as I can to prolong the enjoyment. Perverse, I know, but I do other tasks just so that I can look forward to take it up again. Sadly, I'm almost through, though with the help of TV I may be able to stretch it into tomorrow.

I finished my re-read of The Hobbit. It was more wonderful than I remember.
I was going to delve straight into a re-read of LOTR but decided to read The Long Lankin by Lindsey Barraclough. I am love it so far and I am about 50% through. The fact I have read that much of it in just two days is telling. I used to be a speed reader but my attention span has gotten terrible in my adult years. The house, the yard, or the Internet is always demanding attention when I am not at work. Anyway, The Long Lankin is very good so far and rather Goth. Two little girls in Britain go to live with their Great Aunt in a mouldering estate with a scary, child-killing legend. The kids are so real and imperfect, as are all the characters. It is a gripping story so far! Last edited by covingtoncat73; 07-23-2012 at 02:57 PM. |
