What are KOBO Touch supported firmwares ?

Hi,

I have upgraded calibre to v0.8.60

Even though my koto touch firmware is still 1.9.17, I get the message :

Quote:
Your Kobo is running an updated firmware/database version. As Calibre has not been updated, database editing is disabled. You can enable support for your Kobo in plugin preferences. Doing so may require you to perform a factory reset. Before selecting the "Attempt to support newer firmware" option you should be familiar with restoring your Kobo to factory defaults.
Calibre did add books to the kobo though, but it will not remove existing books.

It doesn't depend only on firmware version it depends on database version. So if you update to firmware 2.0 and then downgrade your database will still be of the updated version. Do a factory reset.

Then presumably the Kobo desktop app updated your database.

Checking my Kobo Touch and backups of the database I have made for the firmware and DBVersion:

- Firmware 1.9.17 has DBVersion 50
- Firmware 2.0.0 has DBVersion 53

I have another older database with DBVersion 36. I think this is from
firmware 1.9.16.

calibre is looking for DBVersion 33 (line 30 of devices/kobo/driver.py).

I am using calibre 0.8.60 with firmware 2.0.0 with no problems so far. Looking at the code for the driver, it isn't looking at the changed parts of the database. I did turn off the loading of cover images as the new firmware handles this better than the old. I also have the "Metadata Management" set to manual so I don't think calibre attempts to write to the database at all.

I'm hoping someone takes up the challenge to update the driver. There is a couple of things that would be good to do. Bookshelves were added with 2.0.0 so it would be nice to be able to use these.

Calibre no longer sees my Kobo Touch

I have been reading about problems with Calibre and Kobo Touch to try and find a solution to my problem. I have tried many of the suggestions with no result. This week Calibre stopped 'seeing' my Kobo Touch. This was after I started receiving the message about the Kobo database and that I may need to do a factory reset - which many have said only works for a short while anyway.

Anyway, this afternoon I decided to try plugging my Kobo in to my other computer which has an old version of Calibre (0.8.49) and lo and behold everything works fine. So I am planning to revert to this version of Calibre on my laptop as well and stop installing any further Calibre upgrades until I read somewhere that everything is working again.

Now, it may be that this will only be a temporary fix, but I have my fingers crossed! I manage all my books via Calibre, constantly swapping books in and out of my Kobo, so this was a major incident for me.

Has anyone else tried this?

@Murohy: Have you

a) checked that the computer itself is seeing the Kobo (if it can't calibe can't).
b) ensured that the Kobo device interface plugin in calibre is not disabled?

You could do as the post My device is not detected by calibre says and capture the debug log and share it; from that it is easy to tell if the interface is disabled and if the device is being seen by Windows,

PeterT - Thank you for quick reply.
I have checked that my computer can see Kobo - yes it can.
I checked that Kobo device interface plugin was enabled - it wasn't, I enabled it and made no difference. - How did it get switched off?
However, while I was looking for things to try I think I have found something. I clicked on Library and moved my library to a new location. This restored the Calibre database and in the process found some problems - namely 'Primary Key must be unique'.
Anyway, that is what I think I did! I know, I should have noted all the steps down as I did them...
Here is the log

calibre, version 0.8.61

All 3 books have been in my library for some time, so can't see why they might be causing the problem. And this may be totally unrelated. I think some books may have gone astray during the restore, but as I have nearly 4000 it won't be easy to check this.

Sorry I did not post the debug log for My device is not detected but for whatever reason it is now working again. Hope it continues to do so.

I think that means there is already a book with the same ID (the numbers in paren)

Do you dual boot Linux<->Windows? You can end up with a entry with a different case mix that you can NOT see in (case insensitive) windows.

kobo/calibre update

I have just discovered that when I restored the Calibre database all my ratings got messed up. About 70% of my nearly 4000 books I have given a star rating to and many of these have disappeared and a lot of the others are just wrong. I had added a column to rate my books which I have done to all I've read in the past 2-3 years. I use these ratings all the time.
I suppose I can manually redo about half of them just from memory. But oh dear! what a drag.
Will it save it for next time?

rating is a default (install) column

When transferring to another computer: it is best you have both systems running the same version of Calibre. At worst, only a few (release) versions different.
