The record for maximum number of Forum Calibre readers

I've just been scrolling down the Forums listing on MR and seen that there are 579 people currently viewing Calibre.

The second highest is Kindle with 149 persons.

Whilst the viewers in other Forums are mainly under 50.

Stone the crows! Is 579 people the 'norm' for people to be viewing Calibre at this particular time (of night, for me)?

One thousand three hundred and fifty-two at the moment, but only seventy-four are members, the rest are guests. I imagine that they get here from search links. There are always a lot reading the Calibre posts.

Is the OP suggesting that ereaders are beginning to wonder why they cannot read their ebooks on devices of their choosing?

That is a lot of philosophy to infer from/inject into a simple question about the raw number of viewers.

Looking at the Calibre Sub-Forums, Library Management has the largest number of threads *and* the largest number of posts. Plug-ins is fifth in number of threads and fourth in number of posts so it doesn't look like the users are obsessed with it: Of the 134,000 posts in the Forum 9,000 or so concern plug-ins. Even generic conversion issues only reach 11,000, so 85% or so of the activity is totally unrelated in any way to platform transportability.

Rather Calibre Forum users seem mostly concerned with usability.
Hardly a shock with a program that adds features weekly and does content acquisition, management, and distribution.

Calibre is trivial to start using but a bear to master.
Rather like Chess or Go.

Or we can think that ereaders are beginning to learn how to use the search function and don't need to start their own threads asking how to convert?

A bit off topic, but do you think congress should enact legislation that requires all ebook distributors to provide software that easily converts their proprietary ebooks into an open format such as epub?

The numbers are likely being inflated by the fact that calibre itself periodically visits the calibre forum when you have plugins installed to check for updates to the plugins. I don't know what fraction of visits are due to this, but it's likely to be significant.

Nah, nothing so complicated .....

A mere curiosity urge overtook me, and hey if something interesting was happening I wanted to have a look and see.

And it never pauses to acknowledge it's fans. Is it elitist or just shy?

General observation note re number of listed Calibre users - it seems that the number doesn't fall below say 550 viewers, and often appears to be around the 550 to 650 ish mark.

I haven't actually recorded these numbers anywhere, just from recollection.

So, Kovid - maybe that's the visitor 'weighting' that Calibre has when it 'visits' the Forum ....
