The dictionaries are on the Kobo side of the internal memory.

You can get to them in the firmware update file, KoboRoot.tgz.

However, mucking around with them is not recommended, unless you really know what you are doing.

Firmware 2 has some great obvious improvements but some very bad problems as well. Aside from the slowness of turns, my device now seems unstable, sometimes crashing to a restart. And since the upgrade my wifi has not worked. It either goes on trying to connect forever until i restart or it says it cannot connect or it crashes to a restart. I have tried to go online in several different locations with passwords that i know and have verified but to no avail. Also to go back to the home page or library sometimes takes a long time, it is inconsistent and feels wrong. I am waiting for another firmware update because i don't want to lose all my shelves but these problems are really iritating.

Replacing an epub

I have been reading a some stories published on-line in various formats including ePub. Some are published chapter at a time and I have been downloading the updated ePub

Due to some of the ways I work with my books, I have been doing some small modifications on them after they are on my KT and have started reading them. This has worked fine with firmware 1.9.17. I could correct something, say spelling or the cover inside the ePub or its metadata, copy the book over to the KT replacing the current version and everything would be fine. The KT would not have any problem with this. I could read the book continuing on from where I was before.

With firmware 2.0.0, if I try this, the KT processes the book when disconnected from USB and deletes it. It deletes the ePub file and all references to the book in the database. It doesn't seem to matter what the change is, it just deletes it. Changing the timestamp of the file is fine - the KT will leave the book there. But, any other change results in the book being removed.

Has anyone else tried this and had different result? Or is what I am doing weird?

I hope I'm not tempting the gods in saying this, but one thing I'm happy *not* to have seen so far with FW2.0.0 is the pseudo-dictionary glitch I was getting quite frequently with 1.9.17, where a word would suddenly become selected for dictionary lookup (even if I hadn't actually touched the screen) and the whole device would lock up and have to be shut down.

Used to happen at least twice in every reading session, but so far (oh I'm chancing my luck now!) it hasn't happened at all under 2.0.0. Huzzah!

Yesterday, Kobo bookstore launches in Japan.
Probably, Firmware was already updated to v2.0.2.
http://download.kobobooks.com/firmwa...date-2.0.2.zip

I could not find release note and difference between 2.0.1 and 2.0.2.

Well, I've just chucked it on my Kobo. It's updating now. Hopefully, it won't take several hours to update. I'll let you guys know how it goes on mine as well.

edit: Aaand absolutely nothing has changed. Same thing here - the release notes say 2.0.0. Sideloaded books seem fine, but still as slow as with 2.0.0. Device information has it as 2.0.2 (r41334, 7/19/12), though.

So I have no idea what's going on. *shrug*

Does anyone have a direct link to 2.0.1?

Or was that the second version of 2.0.0?

The differences between 2.0.0 (final release) and 2.0.2:
  • Changes to the ntx508 boot and kernal images
  • Revision 41334.
  • The Spanish dictionaries are back.
  • Looks like every Japanese dictionary file has changes. This may be some form of global change, though.
  • Changes to \usr\lib\libfreetype.so.6.6.2
  • Changes to \usr\local\Kobo\udev\SD and USB scripts: handling '/proc/apr_ama', whatever that is. Something dealing with the processor, as it converts "ntx508" to "ntx508-apr"/
  • Changes to \usr\local\Kobo\:
    • libadobe.so - adobe handler
    • libcb.so - cbz handler (?_
    • libnickel.so.1.0.0
    • libpdb.so - pdb handler (?)
    • libsqca.so
    • nickel
    • pickel
  • Changes to the Georgia font, all 4 files are over twice as big
  • Changed libQtCore.so.4.6.2 - changed an internal install date to 15 July.
  • Changed libQtWebKit.so.4.6.2

Basically it looks like they fixed:
  • A problem with the Georgia font
  • The problem with the Spanish dictionaries
  • Corrections with the Japanese dictionaries.
  • Various fixes here and there.
  • Possibly a generic fix in the font handler

So I'm guessing this isn't an "official" release yet?

Maybe they've reinstated support for diacritics?

I did a manual update and can happily report that my device is functioning significantly faster, including page turns and general navigation.
The process was this:
I downloaded: http://download.kobobooks.com/firmwa...date-2.0.2.zip
I unrared then unzipped the 2.0.2 pack and placed; KoboRoot.tgz, manifest.md5sum, & the upgrade folder in kobo/kobo folder on the device.
Unplugged the kobo from pc then it went through update proceedure.
Even though on the kobo it still says version 2.0 the above mentioned changes are very noticable.

I did a rewrite of this post after a rethink.

This is the version that shipped for the release in Japan. It is very similar to what we got in 2.0 and should NOT be seen as Kobo's response to what has been reported here.

They're working on that .

Please remember, although someone was able to find this file on the kobo website, this does NOT mean that we (or anyone not using the Kobo/ Rakuten site and devices) were ever supposed to install this build.

No. But my favourites were wiped in the upgrade, and the browser has subsequently crashed during use on 2 occasions so far (making the KT reboot in the process).
