The book I tested on is a drm free ePUB of In the Garden of Beasts by Eric Larson. I tested with a right ragged edge. Someone else might want to test justified text. I used the same size font throughout, a small for me, medium for younger eyes. It was 7 ticks to the right on the size slider. Georgia, Chapter 1, first page: 4 hyphens Georgia, Chapter 1, next page: 10 hyphens Delima, Chapter 1, first page: 1 hyphen Delima, Chapter 1, next page: 5 hyphens Amasis, Chapter 1, first page: 6 hyphens Amasis, Chapter 1, next page: 1 hyphens Then I went 2 clicks larger. You would expect fewer hyphens as there are fewer lines. But since more hyphens per page seems to translate into less reading pleasure, I thought it was worth seeing this. Georgia, Chapter 1, first page: 2 hyphens Georgia, Chapter 1, next page: 1 hyphens Delima, Chapter 1, first page: 2 hyphen Delima, Chapter 1, next page: 0 hyphens Amasis, Chapter 1, first page: 8 hyphens Amasis, Chapter 1, next page: 1 hyphens The results vary enough that it might explain why the hyphenation drives some folks crazy and doesn't seem to matter much to other people. Also note that Amasis actually went up when the text got larger--I don't necessarily think it means much. A larger test would tell us more. What is the biggie to me is that font choice and size do matter and playing with fonts might be worth doing until the fix comes down if you are going to read ePUBs. BTW German hyphenation is even worse than English... something like "v-or" which would be t-he same i-f I would hyphenate English words with one syllable - it should never happen. |

You had already established that the hyphenation was correct in ePUBs. They looked that way to me, too.
For kepubs, I use ragged right and it's all good ![]() |

![]() I do the same for kepubs - actually for epubs, too, only that it doesn't matter in case of hyphenations. ![]() At least the English hyphenation in epubs is correct - the German isn't, not at all. Also experimenting doesn't always help - might be that 3 pages are nice and (almost) clean and the next 3 might have a lot of hyphens. At least that's what I experience. Not saying that there might be no cases where a different font/fontsize eliminates almost all of the hyphens... ![]() |

Since I did a reset of 2.0 (wanted to have the same number people are getting now), I've been using Delima. The hyphen issue really hasn't bothered me. The size I use is the one I tested on in the second batch. It works for me ![]() Last edited by taming; 07-18-2012 at 07:49 PM. |

Looking in the hyphenation dictionaries:
Code:
DE: LEFTHYPHEMIN 1 RIGHTHYPHEMIN 1 EN: LEFTHYPHEMIN 2 RIGHTHYPHEMIN 3 ES: LEFTHYPHEMIN 1 RIGHTHYPHEMIN 1 FR: LEFTHYPHEMIN 1 RIGHTHYPHEMIN 1 IT: LEFTHYPHEMIN 1 RIGHTHYPHEMIN 1 PT: LEFTHYPHEMIN 1 RIGHTHYPHEMIN 1 |

I wonder if they bought/got the hyphenation dictionaries and didn't recognize that it came without any customization. I'm betting this is easy to fix. The fact that kepubs break in the wrong place, maybe not.

But yes, that explain it. Some people might get hyphens that rarely (and might only have correct hyphens) and are therefore not bothered by them - or maybe haven't even realized there are hyphens at all. ![]() By now I have changed the German hyphen.dic (with help of a file provided by WS64) in a way that I don't have any hyphens at all (60 characters before the hyphen, 4 after - words that long are unlikely going to be in my books ![]() And it seems to me that page turns are faster now that there's no hyphenation. Could be my imagination, though... |

If you manipulate the English and German hyphen.dic there are no hyphens anymore. Except for very, very long words (which are also very unusual).
LEFTHYPHEMIN 60 RIGHTHYPHEMIN 60 for example eliminates all hyphenation. |

I remember seeing a post or a release note that the English hyphenation dictionary originally had values of 1 and 1, and was changed to 2 and 3.
Obviously, someone at Kobo didn't make the same change for the non-English dictionaries. |
