I read a sample and had to put it down after suffering excruciating Hunger Games flashbacks ...

There is a reason they call it Pulp fiction.....It reminds me of the Health teacher in my secondary school who said that of all cereals on the market, for 60 percent of them it is more healthy to eat the box rather than the cereal inside the box. Sometimes, it is better just to watch a no-brainer action movie or blow up a bunch of zombies than read really bad prose...

Thanks for that advice. I had already read enough reviews to know not to buy "Shades". I had a similar experience with "Twilight", not on my ereader but paperback. I hurled it across the room after the first chapter. I guess I wasn't the right age for that one. What age group does "Shades" and co target?

Tanda - I am pleased you warned me off "Hunger Games". I have heard varying reviews about it. Was it as bad as "Shades" etc? I mostly read Alison Weir. She writes exceptionally well about the Tudor period. She seems to dislike romantic rubbish. Take a look - you may find something you enjoy. I recommend her.

I also read the first Twilight book....it was pretty boring. I saw the first two movies, the first one was pretty bad. The second was incredible....incredibly boring that is. I could NOT believe how boring it was. I like action, I like vampires, I like sex....all three together are fine....but you have to have an author who actually knows how to write. Although, didn't the Twilight author write The Host? Now THAT book I LOVED. Have a hard cover on my keeper shelf and if she publishes more of that, I'll read them. Seriously good! |

Carolingian, I have observed a definite dichotomy between the reviews of "Hunger Games". It is either a love it or hate it scenerio. In my experience, the author was too focussed on the action (it reminded me of the storylines behind Xena Warrior Princess) and completely snubbed character development. In the end, I scarcely cared whether the main characters lived or died. Where emotion was supposed to be evoked, I vacantly absorbed black words on a white page.
On the other side of the fence, I have spoken to people who loved all three books. I made it through about half of the second one and could go no further. Like I said, it reminded me of a Saturday afternoon action television series shot in New Zealand. As for Shades... I did notice more character development in that novel - but in a fashion that did not really speak to me. As much as I enjoy voicing my displeasure for wasted time on 2 dimensional novels, I do feel grateful that we live in a world where there is a medium to satisfy all tastes. And books like Twilight, Hunger Games and even Shades get people reading and away from their X Boxes. Bravo ! Tanda |

The reviews for the Hunger Games aren't so divided. For the first book, 75% gave it 5 stars, 15% gave it 4 stars, 4.8% gave it 3 stars, 2.3% gave it 2 stars and 3% gave it 1 star. Not much division there. The third book is less highly reviewed with about 50% giving it 4 or 5 stars, while 26% gave it 1 or two stars.
Contrast that to 50 Shades of Grey were 41.4% gave it 5 stars, 9.9% gave it 4 stars, 7.6% gave it 3 stars, 9% gave it s stars, and a whopping 32.3% gave it 1 star. That's a book that is a "love it or hate it" phenomenon. |

Fair enough. I was only speaking from my informal poll with friends and family. That would bias my numbers obviously because I try to surround myself with fabulous people
![]() My key point stands: keep people reading (eventually we can hope that they discover "good" literature. |

We all get caught up in bubbles. Our friends and family are more likely to think like us than are people selected at random. When I go to a science fiction convention, I'm surrounded by people who are a whole lot more likely to like the same kind of books that I do. Outside of the con, not so much.

I heard the ebook sells at about 53 per second. Go figure. I should be so lucky.

Poorly written, bad character deveopment, no romance, little erotica.
Now, a well-written book in the genre (no bdsm) is Bared to You, currently on the NYTimes Bestseller list. Well written, gramatically correct, characters you can identify with, and smoking hot! |
