So I read Charlotte's Web at the library today. What a lovely book!

That's a good book. It made me feel very awkward at the age of 15.

You know what? I asked myself the same thing too. I think I managed to finish because the opening of the book was so promising it'd be cruel of me to drop it.

Abandoned Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair.
After 65 pages this title did nothing for me. I'm not a Jane Eyre fan and don't care whether she marries Rochester or not. Unique plot and some unexpected twists that understandably may keep others reading. Fforde's word skill was adequate enough that I may try his book Shades of Grey in the future.

Undecided on my next read.

I enjoyed the "Eyre Affair" books well enough, though I got a bit tired of them. I think that Shades of Grey was better and eagerly await the sequel to that one.

I have very fond memories of Charlotte's Web. A splendid book.

An average issue, although it does include one story I skipped as I've never read "The Last Unicorn" by Peter S Beagle, and it seems that this is a sort-of sequel. That might well make it above average for many.

Then I read Grantville Gazette 42 edited by Paula Goodlett

Another good instalment of the Ring of Fire soap opera.

Make No Bones by Aaron Elkins

Another in the wonderful Gideon Oliver murder mystery series.

And then I read The Covenant by Poul Anderson, Isaac Asimov, Robert Blocj and Robert Sheckley.

A round-robin novella. It was fun to watch each author leaving plot problems for the next. Out of copyright only in the US (I think), so I suspect that the publishers should not have let Fictionwise sell it to me.

And I'm currently reading two books: Bits of the Dead by Piers Anthony and many others. (Zombie short-shorts.)

1636: The Kremlin Games by Eric Flint et al. (The latest in the 1632 universe.)

So I ran into Un Lun Dun by China Miéville today, and it was on 50% off sale. I hope I'd like it as much as I like its cover, the stained pages, and the illustrations.

I'm currently reading Grave Peril by Jim Butcher

Up next is the Wool Omnibus by Hugh Howey.

Then it is back to Dresden.

If you read 2 Dresden Files books per month you'll be ready for book 14, Cold Days, at just about the time it's hoped that it'll be released. Have fun!

Oh, by the way, if you're not aware of it, there's a prequel now available to the Wool Omnibus, First Shift - Legacy.

Is this in the mainline? I've pretty much gone off anything in the side lines, especially anything written by Virginia Demarce. (Though I might make an exception to hear what's happening with Julie up in Scotland, as long as it isn't a Demarce novel.)

I just recently finished Saxon Uprising, and will move on once I take a bit of a break.

It is mainline IMO, although it is almost entirely centred on events in Russia, and recaps all Russian involvement from 1631 onwards. I'm enjoying it.

Is it a prequel? That's disappointing. I thought I read it was #6 in the series, and answered some of the outstanding questions from 1-5. Still can't get it as an eBook over here...

Yep, it'a a prequel, and yes it does answer a bunch of questions.

Really!

You should talk with Hugh about its availability. I've PMed him here and he participates on the Wool 1,2,3,4,5 thread as well.

As alansplace said, it is a prequel that answers some of the open questions, but it is also #6 in the series and should be read after the first 5, at least the first time through, since there are spoilers for the first 5 in it.

Well, I enjoyed it. We get up to 1636, and a very interesting situation in Russia.

Now to finish off all the zombie short shorts. Some are fun, some are not, but the ones I don't like are over very quickly!

Thanks, I put Shades of Grey on my TBR list. No idea when I'll get to it. I've got over 20 years of reading in my list.
