I think it is the number of books in the "discover" area. FWIW, I think the reading recommendatons are working much better now, especially since you can mark things read with a number of stars or mark as not interested. Except for the anger management book that keeps coming up recommended for me. makes me want to go to Kobo's offices and start tearing the place apart

Spoiler:
For the humor impaired, the anger management book is true, my reaction is not.

Well, third time was the charm. Everything worked perfectly. All my side-loads are in place, and I was able to quickly make a shelf and populate it. Very nice to have the web browser stable again.

The slow page-turns on the side-loads is irritating, but not overly so. I'm currently reading a Baen e-pub, and I don't feel like throwing the Kobo across the room. I'm still enjoying the reading experience. So I can live with it until it's fixed.

Finally got the new 2.0.0 firmware automatically downloaded from Desktop. And it worked.

Even though the revision number is the same as the previously available direct link version, 41166, the zip file sizes are different.

This version has the following differences in the firmware, all in the dictionary directories (KoboRoot.tgz\usr\local\Kobo):
  • Removal of the Spanish dictionaries: dicthml-es and dicthml-es-en.
  • Changes to 79 files in the Japanese dictionary: dicthtml-ja

Edit: The direct link is now donwloading the latest version of 2.0.0

I'm enjoying this update overall. I'm encountering a few issues with it, however, mainly with the shelves.

1. When creating a new shelf, after naming and pushing "next", it can take anywhere from a minute to 3 or more for it to actually make the shelf for me to populate.

2. When choosing to edit a shelf, same problem. It takes at *least* a minute, usually more, for the shelf to come up with the add option.

This leads me to some options I'd like to see added in a future update to make shelves more functional.

1. The ability to change the view of books in the "add books" section of shelves. The way the view is now, it quite frequently cuts off a good portion of longer book titles.

2. The ability to add to shelves from the library view, like we can add to the shortlist. This would save a HUGE amount of time when adding new books, as I wouldn't have to open each and every shelf.

3. The ability to "stack" books from the search option in shelves. Unless I'm doing something wrong, when I search for a book when adding to a shelf, I can only search and add one at a time. Say you have books listed both under "author: last name, first name" and "author: first name last name". The way the search is set up now, I can only choose one book, add it, then I have to open search again and do the whole thing over. I'd like to be able to add the book, use the back button, add another book, etc.

A couple general observations:

Why was the library single book page view removed? Did people complain about that? Just wondering.

Also, I'm still having the problem where, when my device is plugged in and connected to my computer, if the Kobo Desktop software is running, my device will disconnect from my computer after a couple of minutes and isn't recognized.

If any of you remember, last year I was having this issue where it was happening all the time, regardless, and I actually had to have my device replaced. Now it stays connected as long as the Kobo software isn't running; as soon as I run the Desktop software, there goes my device. Does anybody else experience this?

Rather often, I find the issues with the book when I start reading it on the KT and then have to fix it. If nothing else, on the computer, fonts don't seem to be the issue they on the Kobo.

OTOH, it was surprising to see how many people who read this forum are also addicted to improving their ebook experience by taking action and not just complaining that the reader does not display books the way they want to see them.

The hardware hasn't changed AT ALL on my KT (same microsd card) and the books are exactly the same as well.
It stands to reason that this re-release of the firmware has changed.

Still, the page turns are still bad no matter what. I may well go back to 1.9.17, but am willing to give 2.0.0 a shot.

I wonder if they changed the code that loads the upgrade into your Kobo and not the firmware that will be run on the Kobo after the upgrade has completed.

Well, last night the device upgraded again to the new 2.0.0 and now I can't read any sideloaded content. Attempting to open a book results in the device rebooting.

Sigh. I'm going to have to experiment to see if this happens with all sideloaded content, or just content that's already on the device. I really don't want to have to go through loading everything again, but it looks like I might have to.

Edited to add:

Well, I added a new book via Calibre and it looks like the problem is will all sideloaded content, not just content that was already on the device. I'm getting the shakes just thinking about being without my ereader, so it looks like I'm back to my Kobo Original (since I doubt my daughters will give up their WiFi models) until all this is sorted out.
When my KT first upgraded, I had a similar issue but it applied to all books - Kobo or sideloaded. I removed the SD card, did the factory reset and then could open the Kobo book on the device. I powered off, inserted the SD card, powered on, waited 45 minutes to process the books on the SD card and all seems to be going well now -- other than my already complained about nits.

They removed the Spanish dictionaries from the 2.0.0 firmware re-release.

That's why I remove all of the options set by the publishers (colors, fonts, margins etc.) - I want the books to look the way I want.

And since I know what I want and what I don't want, I fix my ebooks before moving them to the Kobo. By now I've learned what may cause problems (for example hinder me from changing the fonts or the margins).

I guess I falsely assumed most people would check the books before moving them to the Kobo, at least most of the time, so that the situation never occurred in the beta test...

Hi all. Occasional lurker here, this is my first post. This forum has been very helpful bringing me up to speed on stuff like Calibre, Sigil, and so on. I'm still using the original firmware 1.9.11 that was preinstalled and everything is working perfectly. Is it true that if I want to upgrade my firmware I am forced to time travel back to 1984 and register online?

I upgraded the firmware today and noticed something I haven't seen mentioned.

While reading a sideloaded epub, I brought up the menus and selected the navigation icon (the double-headed arrow). This displays a scrollbar with some arrows on each side and a box above the scroll bar. In previous versions of the firmware, this displayed the chapter title and the "Page x of y". In 2.0.0, only the "Page x of y" is displayed but the box is still the same size. Other than this, it seems to work correctly.

Is it just me, or has someone else seen this?

It may depend on the firmware version. 1.9.14 has a 'skip setup' button which allows you to use the reader without an account, though only with sideloaded epubs (I assume). I don't remember if this was the case for the other firmwares up to 2 (which I think won't work without an account). In my case, I don't mind having an account but as I run 64bit linux and using the desktop client is a bit of a pain, I often don't bother if I end up resetting for any reason.
