I believe Darkscribe is in Australia. It's in the public domain in Australia, hence there will be cheap versions available there.

Better is speculative, but:

Life plus 50 was for a world in which age of death was highly unpredictable, and writers often were men with far younger wives. Now that most author spouses have their own careers, and there are old age pension schemes, the need is gone.

Amazon is US based. I use a US server, and I just searched on 1984 and found it listed for 99¢, plus other copies much higher in price. A while back it was free on Amazon - before they realised that it was still under copyright in the US.

But Amazon filters the list of ebooks it shows you according to your location. It can sell you a 99c copy of the book, but not someone in the US or EU.

There is no 99c version of "Nineteen Eighty-four" legally available in the US or the EU, believe me.

It's 99 cents for you because you are apparently somewhere where it's out of copyright. It's far more expensive here, as anyone located here can plainly see.

Squat? If you think that Amazon deals with all countries the same way you are naive. You will see constant headlines in this country about the fact that Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, etc. etc., charge a lot more for sales here than for local US sales. It has a lot more than "squat" to do with it. I gave you a link to an Amazon price downloaded in the past twenty minutes.

What the heck are you talking about? We're TELLING you it's different in different countries, and a what's different in this case copyright status.
There's also the issue geo-restriction based on publishing rights in some cases, but that's not the deal with 1984.
