I have only two side-loaded epubs (deleted every other book/guide on the device), and the page turns are slow.

I find that the probelm occurs if you choose a second nbook that is not the most recent read then go directly to sleep mode without returning to home.

Although the behaviour is odd or unexpected, it really does not impact performace.

I too have noticed that page turns are slower with EPUBs. Not terrible, but noticably slower.

What I have noticed is that in trying to use the wish list and recommendations, the page where you can mark a book as not interested or pin it to the wish list, responsiveness is poor. Often, the taps do not register and when they do it takes quite some time to register. Enough time that after tapping, I have assumed a dead tap tapped again and then waited and see the pin highlighted with the text added to wish list followed by being unhighlighted and the text removed from wish list.

It's a quality of life issue - which is just as important as performance.

"offering" updates rather than force feeding them to us

I would think any company would have a challenge with this, and Kobo's front line CS is far from the top of the heap.
They wouldn't have to "support" multiple versions, if someone contacts them about a problem with an old version they tell that person to download the current version.

If that person then still has the problem on the current version Kobo can deal with it.

It seems to me most software companies "offer" their updates, unless you have ticked the auto update box, which personally I don't do.

What do other eReader companies do regarding updates ?

From what I have experience so far with my Sony T1, you have to download the update on a Windows system (which I don't have) and perform the upgrade on an updater program or something (via USB).

It used to annoy me that it couldn't just be a matter of turning on wifi and it auto upgrades, but now, I really appreciate it. I am completely satisfied with how my T1 manipulates books, and have no interest in changing it. It suits my needs as a standalone reader, and I don't use it as a store portal.

As for the Kobo Touch. I have given it to my husband, as it no longer resembles what I purchased last year, and he simply doesn't use wifi or the store links.

It seems pretty obvious to me that Kobo really, really, really don't want people to sideload books. How else can you explain the custom font issues (and past sideloaded books issues, I guess, but this one is especially egregious)?

How could they miss something like this in testing? It cannot happen.

1.9.17 is fine for me. I use the carousel to list short story collections. And one thing I cannot abide is a giant "Bu..." - sorry, "Discover" tab in the middle of my screen. Seriously Kobo, enough with that shit.

With 2.0 the word doesn't becomes doesn ' t because of right and left justification. I was using larger font at the time when this happened. I have never seen this with prior firmware.

Slow Page Turns a dealbreaker

Most of my collection is sideloaded books, and the slow page turns in sideloaded books make this update a non-starter. The rest of it is fine, and the advanced font options are nice, but waiting for the page to turn is throwing me right out of the reading experience.

Anyone find any way to fix that yet? I've done the factory reset and re-upgrade route already, but that didn't fix it, so I went back to 1.9.17.

It's possible that they really don't test the sideloaded book side of the Touch. I mean, after all, if it works for kepubs, it must work for sideloaded books. In a rational design, they'd both use the same display pipeline, with the differences being in the file parsing section of the content flow.

Does anyone know if Kobo provides discounts to the beta testers? If so, how much?

The only discount is the privilege of doing device resets as issues are found.

What about the slow epub page turns? Is it just those with many many books?

I'm contemplating updating to 2.0 with the zip offered in another thread...
The problem I'm seeing is the first time my KT goes to sleep or is put to sleep after I start a book, I see the cover from the previous book. the second time I see the cover from the current book. After a reset, I see a text box with the title of the current book and the book type instead of a picture that first time. Annoying but not a game breaker for me.

At this time, I have about 1300 sideloaded books on my KT, mostly from Gutenberg or similar for the older books. For newer books, I use multiple sources, mostly Baen since their ebook pricing is sensibly lower than their paperback pricing. Though I admit to often spending more that the price of the paperback to get their eARC versions (advance reader copy -- please don't complain about the typos or that the author might do a complete rewrite of some sections before the final release), that is my choice where I just have to see how a series finishes a few months before the normal release. Not to mention Baen's free library which is not getting as many books added lately but is still a great source for early books in a series.

With that number of sideloaded books, I am not noticing any extra slowness in page turns between the sideloaded and the purchased from the Kobo store books.

One nasty nit I just ran into is that I often open epubs in Sigil and reformat them to suit my idea of how the books should look (margins, line spacings, justification, fit the cover image to the screen, etc.). Just tried that with 2.0.0 and when I did my normal procedure of deleting the book from the Kobo, connecting the KT to the computer, copying the revised edition over and disconnecting the KT, the book does not appear in the library. A power cycle or pin reset is needed before I see the Processing Content screen and the book shows up.

Again, annoying to me but how many others edit their epubs on a regular basis?

Pretty much every book on my Kobo is edited for formatting.

I do. Change generic publisher cover to actual book cover. Resize cover so that it fills entire screen. Clean up all the crappy css and simplify the coding, make the formatting the same as they had it but with much much cleaner code. Fix spelling mistakes. Change the meta data for the title of the book if it is a series so that they show in proper order in the Library.
