I've already read the Aubrey/Maturin books (except the unfinished one publshed after his death), and I think I have the whole set in paperback. That's partly why I was interested in going back to the "originals." But not quite interested enough to pay for them.

As I was reading I was wondering where Aubrey and Sharpe would be. It's still early days, so I guess Aubrey's maybe a lieutenant, and Sharpe's still in India.

I had started The Burglar in the Library by Lawrence Block the end of June and am just now getting back to finish it. It is in pbook and I find that I don't enjoy reading as well when it is a pbook. I kept putting off picking it up again even though it's a reread. I love Bernie.

I just bought the newest bundle of her books, and plan to buy the earlier bundle, and also the other 2 in the immediate series that I'm reading.

Her work is very engaging and thoughtful. The pace is leisurely and thought-provoking, and her characters seem real: they reflect and think.

I highly recommend the book I'm reading. From what I've read about the other 8 titles in the overall series, she is not to be missed!

So let's talk about BOOKS!!!!!

Don

I am reading three different novels presently. But I just finished the Trylle Series by Amanda Hocking and loved the first one but was a little disappointed by the last two. I also just finished reading Choosing to See by Mary Beth Chapman who shares her story about her five-year-old daughter who died after her brother accidentally ran over her. I received a signed copy of the book in the mail after my family suffered a similar tragedy. I found the book to be highly comforting to me in my grief. I am working on the forth book in the Fallen series by Lauren Kate and I have decided that I just cannot stomach it. The first three books were OK but this one is just so far out there I just cannot get into it.

Concerning On Basilisk Station, I finished 4 chapters and began the 5th. Gave up, at least for the time being. I don't think space war tactics is of much interest to me as well as the fact that I didn't develop any empathy for any of the characters either (including Honor Harrington).

Oh well, back to my Charlie Chan Omnibus with Charlie Chan Carries On.

I promised not to read Harry Potter on paper. Rowling promised not to take it ebook. She blinked first.

I'm reading the Sorcerer's Stone now and am on hold for the next one. It's not exactly my normal fare, but it's closer than most of what my library e-stocks.

I read Salem's Lot years ago in my teens. It was the very first horror I ever read. It scared me to death and gave me nightmares. LOL I guess that makes it a good read.

I just finished 'On Basilsk Station' and really had to force myself to do so. I admit to skipping over page after page of scientific development of the Warshawski Drive. (Personally, I prefer V.I. Warshawski!) I would love to hear that book 1 was the least readable of the series. That might (and only 'might') entice me to read another.

As for empathy for the characters, I couldn't even work up feelings for the treecat!

I have listened to this one back in May and enjoyed it quite a bit. It is clearly the first book in a trilogy, though, and doesn't resolve a lot at the end. The audiobook is narrated by Katherine Kellgren, which made it even more enjoyable for me - she is among my top five narrators.

I hope to finish Triggers by Robert J. Sawyer today. I am reading the hardcover, and while it has a very nice and easy to read typeface, I still find myself not enjoying it as much as reading on my Kindle. It's a good read, though in my opinion not among Sawyer's best books. But even "lesser" Sawyer is still very enjoyable.

I was also reading another dead tree book in paperback, Farthing by Jo Walton. I found myself putting it down again and again, which had nothing to do with the book itself but with the tiny typeface, so I broke down and got the ebook this week after noticing that Kobo has started selling books from Tor DRM free. I am hoping to finish it soon now.

Well, if you had a hard time with book 1, I don't think you're going to make through book 2. While I finished and actually enjoyed Basilisk Station, I only made it about 1/3 through The Honor of the Queen before I gave up. I know these books a loved by many, but not me.

They do get much better. I really struggled with "Basilisk", but by the time I got to book 3 or 4 of the series, I was really "into" it.

I haven't read any of the Hornblower books, but really enjoyed Master and Commander and thanks to the recent sale at Amazon, I managed to pick up the whole series at $3.99 each (except for The Ionian Mission which was priced at almost double that ). Looking forward to working my way through the series.

Additionally Dean King's "A Sea of Words" which provides a lot of definitions and historical background on the novels is now available as a Kindle edition .

Yeah, Ashes is good. I'm having a hard time putting it down so I can get work done. I'm a little disappointed to read that the story doesn't end in this book, but I guess it's the standard nowadays. Everything needs to be a trilogy.

It seems so. Actually, it is what I call "bookus interruptus". I guess the series is just one big book in three installments.
