Well, that is fine. I prefer if someone steals from me, it goes on their actual criminal record.

But if he is choosing to treat it like a silly prank that someone played on him rather than a crime, then people are going to perpetuate the idea that piracy is a silly practical joke rather than a real crime.

Doesn't sound like he is really taking the matter seriously if he calls the internet rather than get licensed professionals to slap him with a fine and jail time.

I typed in "name of book free download" in a search engine and saw not too far down the line about 5-6 other (likely illegal) places it could be downloaded, so clearly he doesn't seem to take too hard of a line on piracy.

I don't think that you really want to say that it is author's fault that piracy exists.

No, it is not his fault that piracy exists. But by calling his fans to simply point and laugh and go neener neener at the guy, doesn't seem to me to be saying, "a real crime was committed against me". If I read that he has actually pressed charges against him, then I'd believe he actually takes his own status as a victim of crime seriously.

Sure it caused him to go underground, but who's to say he won't just get a new identity and start over again?

One of the problems is that it's NOT a crime. He can't go to the police and say "this guy pirated my book". The police will tell him that it's a civil matter, and that he needs to take civil court proceedings against the person involved. And that's very expensive, and very unlikely to achieve anything in practical terms.

This way, lots of people get to see that bad things can happen to people who pirate books. And it may even put some people off from doing it.

It is illegal, but it's a civil offence, not a criminal one (at least it is in the UK - I believe it's the same in the US). The police won't do anything about civil offences; you have to take the matter to court yourself.

He is a (commercially) successful wordsmith, spindlegirl. He has a fan forum. He just stirred a heated discussion not only on his forum, but here, as well. A bunch of Mobile Read members heard about Terry Goodkind for the first time.

He is dead serious about his actions, and I might not be the only one who came to that conclusion.

Greed. I would have thought that was obvious from the $300 price tag for a self published real book and $10 price for a self published ebook. Even if he charged half that amount he would still be making more money than he did when he was owned by a corporation.

In the US, it's both. However criminal prosecutions are much less frequent than civil lawsuits.

There's a very real market for limited-edition items. Producing such things can be a sound commercial move.

Now having said that, the file sharer is an idiot, how did his name appear to the self-righteous Goodkind ? Did he adverstize on Facebook or twitter his deeds or what ?

It's both in the UK, too, but I don't believe that uploading a book to a pirate site would be treated as a criminal case. Criminal prosecution tends to be reserved for cases where someone's financially profiting from it.
