Something to dream about
I would love if someone made a basic ereader with display, USb port, SD slot and a few basic controls. And a means of loading open source software. I would love to see what someone like Kovid could do with the software.

There are low-cost Android tablets which exactly match your description.

You didn't say e-ink. No, there aren't any e-ink Android tablets.

Current e-ink displays don't have a fast enough refresh rate for tablets.

I love the physical form of my kindle keyboard but I really love calibre's ability to search and sort my ebooks in many different ways. I was just dreaming of a device that combined the two. Calibre also manages much larger number of items without a glitch. I also like open source software. Many minds working to improve something can come up with some great programs. Like I said, just wistful dreaming.

I doubt anyone could beat the price of ones like the Nook Simple Touch, which are used as a loss leader for future book sales by B&N. Other companies would have to charge more even if they cut corners, because they would only be getting profit from the hardware. You can root the NST in half an hour and it is a standard Android tablet (2.1) with an e-ink screen. Seems like they often do deals on them for 80 bucks.

The Kobo Touch basically fits that description. (I'm guessing a lot of the Linux based ereaders would.) Of course the ereader software is proprietary, but it is extraordinarily easy to inject your own program into the system.

But who is writing the software? What I mostly need is something that can handle large libraries and do searches and sorts by a variety of metadata (including custom) fields. I could even do without internal searching of book files nice though it is. I also need collections.

"Calibre Library", most likely. An access app to calibre content server.
