So shall we draw the final conclusion that iOS and Android are trying to be "kiddie" OSs, specially made for those too dumb to use a file manager? What a bright future we can look forward to.

Aaahh! Thanks for bringing that up. It's been my "beef" for decades. People do not complain enough about it, they're just sticking their head in the sand getting their butt exposed...to...someone lifting the wallet from the back pocket.

Perhaps is this "reduce available on-device storage" drive by the manufacturers an attempt to reduce piracy? Less space to store the illegal downloads? It would be a much greater risk to store them in the cloud. A payment from content providers for every GB below 32 on every device? Just kidding, but it would actually make sense, if not for ebooks then for movies and music.

Digital zoom is a total waste of time. What it does is crop the centre of the image (so instead of 8MP you get 5, or 3 or less, depending on how much you zoom in), and then later that tiny image is extrapolated to the optical resolution of the lens (so 8MP in your sister's case) via software. Basically each pixel becomes several pixels and some algorithm tries to figure out what those other pixels are supposed to be based on the neighbouring pixels. An analogy would be to cover a photograph which a checker-board (where half the boxes are transparent, the other half opaque), and then generating the full picture from the half you can see.

AFAIK no current phones have cameras with optical zoom - adds too much bulk for not enough benefit. Samsung tried a few years ago, but it was more like a cheap point n shoot with a bad phone forced into it - if you thought taking pictures with a phone was less than ideal, try making phone calls with a camera

FYI the current iPhone (4s) has an 8MP camera, previous model (4) was 5MP.

No phone has an optical zoom and it makes sense. Just imagine fitting all those working parts in the thickness of the device!

Of course if the phone had two panels that swiveled 90 degrees to one another one would contain the lens edgewise and the other the screen. Unless they made the lens tube fit in the hight of the phone and added a mirror 90 degrees to the last facing lens...

There are third party lenses offered For phones but they look fragile and weird.

The GPS is mostly used to get your location for programs that need it (like google map, facebook, google+ ans so on). So it is not awkward at all to use it.

...in other words, for programs that don't actually need it, but want it as another point of very valuable data to pin you down for their advertsing arms.

Google might want it, but the consumer doesn't really need it.
