Well, the target market for the Nook Color/Tablet, Kindle Fire, and Google Nexus 7 are average consumers who are basically clueless when it comes to technology. To them, RAM is a boy sheep.

To that end, Google wasted money by including features that aren't needed for a tablet in this market. Things like a quad-core processor, GPS, and camera.

I am not sure you are correct. But ok.

Perhaps Internet is not everywhere yet -- we are in transitional period -- but more pervasive in next 5 to 10 years. Will be like gps or satellite phones and work everywhere.
This is my greatest issue with the "we don't need no stinkin' storage; we got the cloud!" crowd. Because internet is available where you are does not mean it is available everywhere. You are correct; it will be more widely available in 5-10 years; at that point, I will happily buy a device with no storage. Until then, give me storage. Don't try to sell me a device that will be obsolete in two years on the basis that I'll really be able to take advantage of its capabilities in 5-10 years. I went on vacation last week. At no point during my trip was I away from the mid-atlantic/atlantic coast region of the US. Once I was 25 minutes from my residence, I had no 3G/4G service on my iPad or iPhone, with a few exceptions when I happened to pass a major city. During my entire stay at a beach, where I was staying at a 200 condo complex, I had zero service. The United States is a big country with lots of rural areas (most much more rural than the places I was), and a large chunk of the population is without reliable broadband internet. It is getting better, but it isn't there yet.

We need to quit assuming that everyone else is just like us, and, if they aren't, they are a "niche" market. It's nice that there are lots of choices, and we can generally all find something that satisfies our needs. If a product doesn't have what I need, I don't have to buy it. But I resent the implication that, because a product does not have a feature that I and a large chunk of other users need, we are somehow using it incorrectly, or just plain weird, and we should just get in line and wait until our world lines up with everyone else's.

This is correct. Buy for what you need.

Many popular devices may not work for all.

niche monkey issues this challenge to the cloud crowd

turn the 3G/4G radios off in your smartphones and rely completely on wifi for 72 consecutive hours - hint: Skype is your friend

I have to disagree; the user experience is paramount to these devices, and you can't have a responsive UI if you skimp on CPU and RAM. You certainly don't need a quad-core, a decent dual-core would do, but this Nvidia chip is very good value and makes sense to choose it.

The GPS, it depends on your usage, it would allow you to use your tablet as a navigation device (now you can save maps on your device), or by using a 3rd party app. The camera is also a nice addition for video conferencing.

GPS allows clever map-based things, which is clearly a big strength for Google, also allows location-based advertising, and a front camera for Skype is probably considered a basic requirement now.

My remark didn't exclude a dual-core or sufficient RAM. Quad-core is overkill for this market.

Since this seems to be about what "most" people need in a tablet at this level, most of them have smartphones that are much easier to use for navigation, photos, and video conferencing. Therefore, a waste of money by Google.

Personally, I'm glad these features were included; but really, they weren't necessary.

Why? I pay good money for that 4G for times that WiFi is not around.

Was there another cheaper chip for use?

It is good to future proof a device too.

I don't think so. Regardless of whatever reason people buy these devices the vast majority end up using them to watch movies and play games. The quad core and 12core GPU will help make games and movies fluid.

The GPS, I'm sure, is how Google makes it's money. And the FF Camera well I have to agree with you on that one. I would have thought a back camera would be more important.

And, in the SIII, you can also add an external SD card of up to 64GB should you need more storage. So this explanation doesn't hold water in my view.
Good point. On my S(original) it did have a different partition for the sdcard slot and the internal storage. It seems Samsung has gotten smarter.

Ironically the SD card slot on my device was a huge plus when I purchased my phone... two years later I have yet to put an SD Card slot on my device.

I guess to me SD Cards are like insurance policies nice to have in case you need them but hardly used if ever.

Because my iPod touch doesn't have a card slot, it stays at home and serves primarily as a streaming internet radio device. What little space that is available is reserved for audiobooks and podcasts.
