The future?? Not quite like the floppy drive, when they took that away they gave us SD cards, CDs, DVDs, and giant hard disks. Now they are taking away everything. And we should just say "thank you, may I have another one?" This isn't hazing, if enough users refuse to buy they will stop ripping us off.

I have Oxford English Dictionary (full version) on a CD, it came with a floppy that holds the installation. I can't use it anymore, because I can't install it.

It is possible to install a floppy image on a USB stick and boot it from the USB. I use a bootable USB stick to adjust the head park times on WD Greens to reduce it from their asinine 8 second default to a more sensible 300 seconds using the WD utility for that, which has to run in a DOS environment.

Google search for "floppy image on a usb" It's also possible to make a bootable CD floppy image, but I think the USB route is simpler.

Get a USB floppy drive. I have one. It wasn't expensive.

Absolutely! The reason I bought it is that I found an adventure game player for my iPad, and I had a collection of old "Infocom" adventure games (a set called the "Lost Treasures of Infocom") which I only had on floppy disk. They must have been at least 10 years old, if not more, but they all read perfectly on that USB floppy drive.

There's no particular hardware reason a device can't have both. The problem is that there is no good UI for it.
Hmm, that sounds like what I've been saying

Quote:
One of the core Android principles is that you never need a file manager. Ever. We wanted to avoid the obnoxious "sneeze and a file picker appears" syndrome of basically every other OS.
Well, every other OS with one glaring exception.
They are choosing the follow the iOS example, so they must think there is some sense there.

Or, as Steve Jobs put it:
Quote:
in every user interface study we’ve ever done […], [we found] it’s pretty easy to learn how to use these things ‘til you hit the file system and then the learning curve goes vertical. So you ask yourself, why is the file system the face of the OS? Wouldn’t it be better if there was a better way to find stuff?
Now, e-mail, there’s always been a better way to find stuff. You don’t keep your e-mail on your file system, right? The app manages it. And that was the breakthrough, as an example, in iTunes. You don’t keep your music in the file system, that would be crazy. You keep it in this app that knows about music and knows how to find things in lots of different ways. Same with photos: we’ve got an app that knows all about photos. And these apps manage their own file storage. […]
And eventually, the file system management is just gonna be an app for pros and consumers aren’t gonna need to use it.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

That is a must-do for WD Green drives. I assume you are referring to wdidle3.exe. I did this to all of my WD Green drives, they simply will not work in a RAID or a mutli-disc external enclosure unless you change the park time to 300 seconds.

I do not like physical media because I can forget it or leave it lose it.

But with Internet nearly everywhere (where I am) it is easy to to turn on 4G and get at my files.

Perhaps Internet is not everywhere yet -- we are in transitional period -- but more pervasive in next 5 to 10 years. Will be like gps or satellite phones and work everywhere.

That's an understatement. Until then, it's rather stupid to remove storage from a device.

No, not if majority of users in target market have needed internet access. People who don't are NOT in target market and should buy more niche machines to fit their needs.
