And, in the SIII, you can also add an external SD card of up to 64GB should you need more storage. So this explanation doesn't hold water in my view.
If you check the thread you will see an explanation why they did not choose to have an external SD card in that way. The thing that was quoted was more an explanation of why you cannot put data on the internal storage using USB mass storage.

Well here is the reason:
Quote:
There's no particular hardware reason a device can't have both. The problem is that there is no good UI for it.

One of the core Android principles is that you never need a file manager. Ever. We wanted to avoid the obnoxious "sneeze and a file picker appears" syndrome of basically every other OS. Local data that apps know how to handle should just be magically available within the apps, or stored in the cloud. You shouldn't have to go spelunking on your SD card to find data.

The problem with having both internal storage and SD cards is that suddenly that goal gets a whole lot harder to achieve. For a given shot, should the camera save to internal-16GB, or to SD card? Should an app from Market be installed to internal or SD? etc.

Yes, we can solve this by letting the user choose, or have it be in settings. But then, that's a file picker, or close enough to the file picker experience that we dislike it just as much.

And besides that, there are API consequences: if you stick in an SD card with photos on it, do you add those to the system media content provider? If you do, you will screw up apps because they aren't designed with the concept that photos can come and go.

What we will probably do eventually is add an import/export concept to removable storage. So the Camera will always save to internal-16GB, and when you pop in an SD card (or insert a thumb drive on USB host devices) you can start a migration or import/export dialog.

But until we have that, devices will generally either have an SD card, or a large internal storage, but not both. I totally get that a lot of people like SD cards, and I miss USB Mass Storage myself. But then, that's why it's great that there are so many devices to choose from.

tl;dr: it's a can of worms. We're thinking about compromises for future versions.

Which is why usb drive mode got dropped in favor of MTP (you can't pass on full access to another machine of a volume you're running your system stuff on like you could a separate volume for media). Google trades one set of inconveniences for another. There is more than one solution to any problem, and they've opted to embrace simplicity over versatility. As to Google's opinion that it's "way better", well, it isn't. It's better for the people it's better for and worse for everyone else. Thankfully, Google isn't dictating that design choice to all manufacturers. Hopefully, Asus doesn't get cooties from this partnership, because to my eye, they're at the cutting edge for folks like me, who would rather have options than not.

Also the Nexus' filesystem is ext3 and not a hybrid of ext3/Fat32 which will make the device that much faster when accessing data.

So, somehow, storing all your apps, appdata and media in 16GB onboard is somehow superior to squeezing it into 16GB onboard and essentially limitless external?

Must be that new math thing they teach at schools now.

Well, no. That was not the reason which you see in the text. You must have missed the thing about the basic design principle.

+1. I would even mention the lack of an SD slot it if they had a 128 GB of internal storage. 8GB, that was pretty decent in 2005, I think?

THANKS! I was so focused on the tablet that 'universal remote' just didn't register. A 'duh' moment. That would be handy for my music!

Well Nook 7 8gb costs $187 in materials alone so I see why they did not add more memory or add sd card slot to it. If you need more memory you get the 16gb version otherwise google would have lost millions in selling this tab. At the moment they will most probably recover most of the costs of the 8gb one with the 16gb.

In this case you are probably right. But why did memory modules not drop in price as they did in the past? Because device makers have been shortchanging us and did not steadily increase storage size. In 2008-2009 32GB cost as much as 8GB in 2007. Why, because they could produce in quantity. If they hadn't started this silly game, 128GB would cost as much as 32GB in 2009 and 64GB would be the low end.

Also, the $25 store credit - I gladly trade that for a card slot. Yes, I realize it's 'for a limited time only' - is it easier to justify advertizing expense than manufacturing expense?

Whenever I see things like "basic design principle" my internal translator says "they've dropped/stopped something working".

Design is for people who call beige "taupe". Function is for people who care what that beige thing is actually capable of doing.
