I've just finished Usher's Passing by Robert McCammon. I'm a McCammon fan and I really enjoyed this one.

I didn't think the first couple of books he wrote were amazing, but he certainly made up for it later.

Anyone read The Long Earth by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter yet? I've just started it, and it doesn't feel anything like a Pratchett to me. It's feels more like a (non-horror) Stephen King, which was quite a surprise.

Intriguing, though.

I have a sample on my Kindle but haven't got to it yet. The collaboration of Pratchett and Baxter is at least surprising and I hope I will like it more than Good Omens (I know it is supposed to be very good, but it just didn't do anything for me).

I like most of Baxter's stuff that I have read. He is just so different from Pratchett that I couldn't imagine those two collaborating on anything.

I'm not aware of having read any Stephen Baxter before - having just looked he has quite a large canon of work. It seems he is known as a hard sci-fi author, and has collaborated with Arthur C. Clarke, which make more sense.

That said, I'm about 15% into the book right now, and am starting to get caught up in the story, so I'll give it a thumbs-up so far.

Blood of the Underworld by David Dalglish, whom, in my opinion, is one of the best sword&sorcery authors going these days. not too shabby for an indie.

Well, if there were something like "epic hard sci-fi", I'd say Baxter writes it. My favorite book by him (of those I have read) is The Time Ships, a sequel to Wells's Time Machine. And since you mentioned his collaboration with Arthur C. Clarke, I liked The Light of Other Days very much too.

A part from this, I finished Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire yesterday. I hadn't read it in a while, mostly listened to the audiobook (the Stephen Fry version), but now it is so much more convenient to read since I have all the books on my Kindle. I have now started Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, of which I intend to read a chapter or two in between all the other books I have started...

Just finished reading Lady of Quality by Georgette Heyer. I've had this in my TBR for a while, bought during the big Heyer sale last year, but I like to parse the Heyer books out a bit, since they're so delightful. This is one of her last books, and like all of the Regencies, an amusing and fun read. A perfect break.

After 3 weeks of fits and starts, I have finally finished both Changer of Worlds (Worlds of Honor #3) & Ashes of Victory (Honor Harrington #9).

I'm currently reading the last story in In Fire Forged (Worlds of Honor #5), which will be followed by the 2 remaining stories in The Service of the Sword (Worlds of Honor #4), completing all of the current anthologies in the Honoeverse.

Cool Dana Stabenow

Cheechako (An Alaska Short Story)
Gold Fever (An Alaska Short Story)
The Perfect Gift (An Alaska Short Story)
A Woman's Work (A Mnemosynea Short Story)
Justice is a Two-edged Sword (A Mnemosynea Short Story)
Cheechako took place during the Alaskan Gold Rush at the turn of the century (19th to 20th) and concerned a murder that was committed on the Chilcoot Trail. The descriptions of the conditions that the people involved had to overcome were fantastic.

The Perfect Gift was about Werewolves and a serial murder investigation in modern Alaska.

Gold Fever also takes place in modern Alaska and concerns the investigation of a murder that took place in the bush (remote Alaska).

Justice is a Two-edged Sword takes place in the fictional Kingdom of Mnemosynea and concerns a female wizard, Sharryn, her female companion, Crowfoot (who wields a magical sword), a murder and a lynch mob.

A Woman's Work also takes place in the fictional Kingdom of Mnemosynea and again features Sharryn and Crowfoot who join forces with a musician called Basil the Bard.

Dana says...
Quote:
It’s looking like a novel set in the Mnemosynean ‘verse at some point.
...and that sounds like a good idea to me!

Anyway I enjoyed them all and since I'm kinda' on a Dana Stabenow binge I'm going to read the 2nd Liam Campbell Mystery, So Sure Of Death

Just Finished:

- The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss - It was a decent story, now I'm on the waiting list for book two, The Wise Man's Fear. I hope book three doesn't take forever to come out.

Currently Reading:

- A Letter of Mary by Laurie R. King (63%)

- Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick (0%)

- Moby-Dick, or The Whale by Herman Melville (28%) [on hold]

I'm just over half done with a very good book...

Star Trek: Typhon Pact: Raise the Dawn by David R. George III

Quote:
After the disastrous events in the Bajoran system, Captain Benjamin Sisko must confront the consequences of the recent choices he has made in his life. At the same time, the United Federation of Planets and its Khitomer Accords allies have come to the brink of war with the Typhon Pact. While factions within the Pact unsuccessfully used the recent gestures of goodwill—the opening of borders and a joint Federation-Romulan exploratory mission—to develop quantum-slipstream drive, they have not given up their goals. Employing a broad range of assets, from Romulus to Cardassia, from Ab-Tzenketh to Bajor, they embark on a dangerous new plan to acquire the technology they need to take control of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. While UFP President Bacco and Romulan Praetor Kamemor work feverishly to reestablish peace, Captains Sisko, Jean-Luc Picard, and Ro Laren stand on the front lines of the conflict . . . even as a new danger threatens the Bajoran wormhole as it once more becomes a flashpoint of galactic history.

"The Time Ships" is a wonderful book, I completely agree. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be available as an eBook.

I finished The Forever War and enjoyed reading it. It is not my usual type of book but it was fairly inexpensive and I'd heard it is a classic of that genre, so I figured why not. I'm glad I did.

Now I have to finish Everywhere But No Place.
