I had to explain the slide rule to a faculty member the other day.

I've lost my 12 inch slide rule somewhere in all the moves since university, but we still have the 6 inch and a round slide rule (6-inch diameter). My daughter just graduated university with a degree in mathematics, and she has never used a slide rule!

I'm feeling very young now. I've never used a slide rule either, though my Father use to threaten to take away my calculator and give me a slide rule to do my homework with. I can't remember if he offered to teach me how to use it first or if that was part of my homework too.

I have used a slide rule, and never did learn how to do square roots manually because it was too easy to pull out the slipstick and get it to three places.

I knew an MBA candidate who was excused from a graduate finance exam because the batteries in his calculator had died. He probably could have done the calculations manually, but not in the desired time frame.

OTOH, I've encountered people who can't do simple arithmetic without a calculator, which is pushing things a bit.
