Like so many other things, I've enjoyed some of the Tor books, and have not been interested in others. However, I'd still say it's been a great way to introduce readers to new authors, and to Tor, so I'd call it a worthwhile and effective promotion.

Finally the last free ebook email said
On July 20, 2008, Tor.com will launch. A new kind of SF and fantasy site.

Also

In about a week, you’ll receive another e-mail to download the next book, Soul by Tobsha Learner. In the last week of our giveaway program, we’ll be making all the books in this program available one final time.

So next Friday it's Soul then the Friday after is repost of all the books.

So those who haven't registered yet do so before Friday the 18th. Last change to get all the books.

I sincerely hope that all this delay ( it was supposed to end after 12 weeks we are now at 21 and one more to go the an other recap week) is to get the majority of their collection ebook available. It would be good promotion if you could buy the rest of the series in ebook format Ok it still good promotion since most people still live by pbooks

Well, there's nothing to stop us all hanging around on their new site, saying how great their free ebooks were and how we'd love to buy the rest as ebooks. Might have some effect.

Actually, I suspect those nice people at Tor are probably lurking on this thread and already know what we think

Then they bloody well better follow that advice or I'll buy myself a nice, rusty pitchfork and some napalm to ease their way to Hell.

This'd better not be Another Slight Suffered (ASS) and they screw up or Another Slight Suffered for Europe Specifically (ASSES) by limiting their sales to the US and Canada (as with iTunes, ABC,...).

Only if one can follow up on this "introduction" by purchasing more content from said authors in ebook format, at least in my opinion.

I still keep looking for Cherie Priest's ("Four and Twenty Blackbirds") other books in ebook form but only find paperbacks.

Really? Was if very SFey? Was it hard SF? Seems like alternate reality is the main genre based on what I read about it.

The description says it was the authors "first" book. Is it the first of a series? It is the only one by her in the Kindle store.

Yes, I do already have it. It was the first free book I downloaded from Amazon (I didn't know about Tor.com at the time).

Cherie Priest has 2 other titles: "Wings to the Kingdom" & "Not Flesh Nor Feathers". I've only been able to find these titles as paperbacks, so I keep checking back for ebook versions.

She also has a novella available from webscription. Here is the link.

I haven't read any Priest myself yet, but she's one of a few authors I think I might be interested in that I 'discovered' only because Tor was giving one of her books away. That makes this an effective promotion in my opinion. Of course, like others I do not intend to buy further books in these series in paper form.

I'm right there with you. I'm appreciative of the books they gave us, but had hoped it might be an indication that they, and they're owners other labels, were finally getting into the ebook market in a more serious way than they've been in the past. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be happening. Prices are still way out of whack for one thing. Most of these 'free' books are now available for sale at ebook retailers, not for a list of $7.99 like they're pbook counterparts, but for a list of $14.00. Books that have been out as mass market paperbacks (not these free titles) for many years are available as ebooks with a list price based on the hardcover. They don't seem to get, or don't seem interested in getting, the current ebook market.

There are at least a half dozen books from this free program that I'd more than likely be interested in purchasing 2nd, 3rd, etc. books for if they were available. Instead I haven't even read the first book since there's no way to get more books (unless you go darknet).

I doubt it. They've said all along that while this giveaway was a way of promoting their new site that the site would have little to nothing to do with ebooks.

I've been writing to authors where I can find an e-mail address, thanking them for agreeing to let TOR give their book away and pointing out that I would love to purchase the sequel, but I'm only going to purchase electronic books.
