I've read up to Hogfather so far and I've found Maskerade to be very weak. I got no real out loud laughs from it. And it was just OK at best. It's by far much weaker then The Colour of Magic. If it wasn't for the fact that you might need to know stuff that happens in Maskerade later on, I'd suggest to skip it.
Seeing the huge variations of peoples reactions to Discworld, I am getting more and more reluctant to suggest such things to others. I am one that agrees that the first two (The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic) are the weakest of the series - though that probably has something to do with no longer being a fan of short fiction, and those early books read (to me) as a series of linked short stories. Maskerade is certainly not a favourite of mine, but if I was going to try and pick lesser books from the series I'd probably include Sourcery and Soul Music - but I still never skip any of them in my regular re-reading of the series. I tend to place the stand-alones, Pyramids and especially Small Gods, near the top of my list of favourites - though Night Watch currently holds the pinnacle pretty firmly.

To get the most out of "The Colour of Magic" you really need to know the fantasy that he's referencing.
Therein lies most of my problem with the series. I read precious little fantasy, so the humor flies right over me.

I've tried 'The Color of Magic' three times now, and never seem to be able to get past the first 50 pages... I 'want' to like it, as I really enjoy reading series, and there are so many in this one, but...

You might want to start with one of the other sub-series in the series then. Death/City Watch/...

(Despite what others may say...) You can enjoy most of these books as stand-alone or at least semi-stand alone books. I have read the City Watch books and a couple others, but not everything and while I am sure I am missing some of the "in" jokes, they were still great.

I tried reading both 'Color' and 'Hogfather' and was unable to warm up to to either. Also had the same problem with the Doug Adams books. It doesn't make them bad, just not appealing to me.

I love the late Douglas Adams, and have read most of his work including all the Hitchhiker books. If I had a pink Kindle, I'd buy the books he's still writing.

I have to disagree. Terry does not recap and he expects you to know what's come before. So you can lose a lot, spoil things or just go huh? if you read out of order.

Order is published order.

Nope. Especially if you follow the reading guides from Lspace.org (generally considered to be the place to go for all things Discworld).

Follow the Watch path (for instance). The stories are complete. And obsessing about details adds nothing to the stories.

I'm constantly reading the stories out of published order and even though Jon obsesses about the published order, they're enjoyable in *nearly* any order.

As has been said before, that chart is a worthless piece of cr@p and should be deleted. It's worthless for a first time reader. it just confuses things and spoils the series.

I have to admit, you are the person I put the disclaimer in there for...

I know for a fact that you can enjoy most of the books without reading them in published order...I have done it for many of them. As I said, you may not get the most out of them and miss some things, but you can enjoy them immensely.

Okay, I'll put my hand up (if you can see me? I always sit at the back of the class). I get what you are saying, but why pink?

Again, I have to disagree. I've read some where you'd be somewhat lost if you didn't know what happened before and one of them would be spoiling another read out of order. I feel I'd not have enjoyed them as much had I read them out of order.
