I return early but it actually took me a couple months of borrowing before I ran across that option in Adobe Digital Editions.

I've never returned an ebook before so pbooks yes, ebooks, no. I assumed they just lock up, cos they don't go back on my prst1

Cool eBooks in libraries? Whatever next?
I live in rural Scotland. My local public library has hardly registered the arrival of the 20th century, let alone the 21st. ) As I don't much care for Mills&Boon romances or Agatha Christie whodunnits, I've never found much there (in fact anything there) to interest me in the slightest. Thank heavens for Amazon, etc, I say, or I'd never read a decent book. Not to mention the fact that, when I read a book, I rather like to know where it's been last.

That all said, I find the subject of ebooks and libraries a curious one. Given ebooks are digital files - why on earth would we need public libraries for them? (Be clear - I'm not denigrating the value of public libraries over the last century, despite my local library's inadequacies.) But - given the nature of the media - why should we ever need more than a website? Or am I missing something?

I default to 21 days because it seems all my holds come in at once. Early return was not an option until recently. Kindle now allows early return so now I return my ebooks after I've finished reading them. I'm not sure early is an option for non Kindle books.

Someone asked a question about how to return ebooks. I don't know how for ADE, but for Kindle, go to manage your kindle on Amazon.com. Your library books will show up with your other books. Under actions, an option is to return the book.

Because libraries let you borrow them for free*. A private website would charge you for the service.

* Here in the US, public libraries are generally funded by property taxes; which everyone pays. Whether you use your library or not, you still pay property taxes to support it. So when I say free, I mean you don't have to pay any additional fees for borrowing books.

Yes, and I often return early when borrowing from Overdrive libraries.
For the Swedish e-library it doesn't matter, because it doesn't work the same way with wait lists and checkout limits. I sometimes return early anyway because it removes the download from my folder as well as returning the book.

Thanks for the welcome. Paying taxes for services we don't use (or - around here at least - don't even exist) seems a constant everywhere.

I wasn't wondering about commercial websites. My local library service does have a website - but not a mention of ebooks. As far as I can discover, the nearest ebook public library is 50 miles away in Edinburgh, but even online they will only serve Edinburgh residents.

I'm disabled, and while visits to my local library aren't impossible, I've found them rarely worth the trouble. I have a Kobo courtesy of a joint family birthday gift - limited so far to some books bought at the same time. I'm reluctant on principle to pay as much or even more for digital books as for the printed product. An accessible free library website would be a godsend.

I just can't see any reason for geographical restrictions on a digital product that could so easily be online and universal - I'd have thought libraries would be the first to see the advantages of consolidating nationally what seems to be a mixture of geographical gaps and duplicated effort.

Some libraries sell out-of-area library cards at a reasonable price for checking out ebooks. The Brooklyn and Philadelphia libraries both do this. If you click on Wiki at the top of the Mobileread page and then select 'ebook lending libraries' you may be able to find such a library.

That makes sense. In the US, eBook library services usually are usually consolidated at least at the county level, and sometimes at the state level.

Sometimes, even if your state does not have a single consolidated eBook collection, you can join a non-local library for free. For example, I believe that any New Jersey resident can join the State Library for free, which is part of the best eBook consortium in the state. (I've never read of a MobileRead poster doing it, but it looks to me from the state web site that it is possible.)
