If I teach myself Ubuntu can I use the Custom kernel for Kindle 3?

In my case the reason was as follows - there were files in the folder /mnt/us. I deleted the files using serial port. After that I rebooted the book and the userstore was mounted. My problem is described here https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...48#post2134248

You lost your Documents folder because you deleted it.

As I explained in the other thread where you posted this (that you also linked to above), the kindle shares /mnt/us as the exported USB drive that you see as a drive letter in Windows. You deleted the contents of your USB drive. Do not delete stuff that you do not understand. You could easily have bricked your kindle by deleting any of the other folders.

I deleted the files using serial port kindle and load rootfs over usb. At that time the USB drive was not mounted to /mnt/us.

How can you be so sure? If a mount point contains ANY files, it must be mounted. If there are REAL (unmounted) files in the mount point folder, then the mount cannot succeed. And how could those files get there in the first place?

It seems rather coincidental that a mount point contains files if it is not mounted, but then deleting those files also deleted the contents of the USB drive. That sure looks like it WAS mounted when you deleted it. How else can you explain it? How are you so sure that it was NOT mounted?

When I accessed my kindle from the serial port during bootup, I had root access to the USB drive mounted on /mnt/us, on both my K4 and my K5. I suspect that the K3 acts the same way.

Somebody is taking a technical statement as a personal criticism again.

And for the casual reader's information:
MS-Windows products requires that a folder be empty to be used as a mount point.
Linux and other *nix systems do not.
The Kindles run Linux.

I managed to "fix" my Kindle. After reading everything I could on the USB and deciding that was more time, energy & $$ then I wanted to invest - I bought a Kindle 3 off of eBay for very low $$ that had one of those broken screens with the funny lines all over it. The outside of the screen looked whole but underneath it - when I opened it up - it was shattered. I then swapped my good screen with the internal components of the broken Kindle 3 and then had a working Kindle again!

Then how did the files on it get deleted? One possible way is if /dev/mmcbl0p4 somehow was not able to mount. If a mount fails (possibly because there were files in its mount point?) then the startup scripts reformat it as vfat, and repopulate it with default files from /opt (as I recall)...
