VR, see the link in my sig line about literary reading for more on margin notes. I never used to write in books, but I could get into writing in ebooks... and imagine being able to share those annotations with friends?

I have found the best way to provide the "feel of a p-book" with a CYbook gen 3 is to buy a CYbook embossed cover (from Cybook). I got one when I bought the CYbook initially, and it took a few days for the cover to form-fit the book, but it gives you the thickness of a 300 page paperback and the weight of a 400 page paperback. In addition, it has a nice hand feel, (at least to my hand) and you open the protective cover like a cover of a p-book. Last, but not least, it does a reasonable job of protecting against scratches on the e-ink screen.

Thats how Sony sold eBooks do it. But ones I convert have a proper ToC externally. So I can go to the external ToC and see when it ends. Except of course Discworld eBooks. They really don't have chapters as Terry Pratchett doesn't believe in them.

i miss knowing how much book is left - the percentage bar isn't very useful. i also miss being able to just put down my book and go to sleep. i always get up and put my cybook away on its own lone spot in my computer armoire, and then it takes me a few minutes to get relaxed again.

Why can't you put down the Cybook as you do any pBook? I just put it in the bed desk (or whatever is called in english ), turn off the lights and zzzzzzzzzzzz.

"Bedside table", and, yes, that's what I do too, and am just about to now (well, after a bit of reading first).

Imagine 100 pbooks, glued together; then consider your cybook can hold many many more in that little box...
What you miss in the pbook is surely worth missing for the benefit?

I love my Reader and this seems clearly the right way to go. But the question was if there are things we miss and the answer is yes. I wouldn't go back, though.

The pleasure of going to a bookshop, the smell of books (evocative), seeing/holding the book before buying, looking at the 'blurb' and art-work on the covers (in colour) etc...

These days when I wander into a bookstore, I leave with a little list of titles and authors. That scrawled list on a 3x5 card represent the books I would have bought without second thought before I got my Reader. Now I dutifully take that list back to my computer, figure out if I can get them as ebooks and update my wishlist. I still get the bookstore experience but it's just a little less fulfilling.

I still go to the bookshop. I hold books & read the blurb on the back. I also read the synopsis and reviews at Amazon. I haven't really given up anything by moving to eBooks -- though the timing and concurrency has changed.

And, I actually stand there in the bookstore, check to see if it is available on the Kindle, and download it right there.

I know .... brazen of me. It feels so wonderfully evil!! But, I lose lists ... I've got so many lists and they are all .... somewhere.

I already have guilt over all the books I have downloaded but haven't read yet. Besides, the money I save by not immediately buying a book goes toward paying for fuel that I used driving to the bookstore.

Every time I compare my list of books downloaded to the list of books read so far, I sigh. What's the saying? "So many books, so little time" That's me. I once joked with my Mom that she'd never have to worry about me committing suicide because there are too many books I want to read before I die.

Good grief! I just reread my post. How depressing.

The word "guilt" is not in my lexicon (oh, wait ... I just used it, so it must be ... paradox alert!!).

I only get to go to the bookstore when I go into Austin for supplies, and that is not very often. There are not bookstores close to me (that I know of anyway).

I love looking at a long list of books I haven't read. I'm the sort that gets distressed when the list gets too short.

Same thing with my movie list. My Netflix list has about 200 titles on it right now ... and I watch, at most, two movies a week.

Can't read or watch movies today, however ... must go to Home Depot for things to repair the house and some of the furniture. That's the problem with being an old spinster lady. No one to pass off the honey-do list on.
