What's your ideal tablet?
Given the disappointed comments about the Nexus 7's lack of SD card slot, I'm curious to see what most folks would like to see in their ideal tablet (that's still within the limits of today's technology).
Mine would be: Portable

With exception of ICS (witing for the update for that) or Jelly Bean, mine's in my pocket. It's a Samsung Galaxy Note.

* wifi and 3g/4g and bluetooth connectivity
* no need to "root" * handwriting recognition, voice recognition, etc. * front and back cameras, works with Google Voice, Skype, etc. * gps enabled, motion sensors * biometric login (retina scan, fingerprint) that works * easy to print documents, screenshots, etc. * powerful GPU for HD video, gaming, etc. * 4G+ RAM * solid state HDD * expandable memory * multi-tasking * long battery life * light, inexpensive, rugged |

Iris scan or facial recognition would be more practical using just a camera.
Anythewho... My "ideal' tablet involves some yet uninvented technologies, like tactile response screen surface (for real keyboard feel. See the Star Trek TNG Tech manual....), folding reflective/transmissive dual mode display, ambient energy inductive charging, and infinite, free bandwidth. I can think of more. |

7" - 8".
Decent screen (IPS, AMOLED, I'm not picky on a tablet) Full size USB (like my Thrive). Full size SDXC (like my Thrive) would be a bonus. D-pad and 4-6 buttons for games/emulation/etc...really wish someone would make a tablet with even a couple of buttons and a d-pad. Make use of that bezel ![]() |

After playing with my daughter's tablet I've come to realize that the ideal tablet for me is the one that I have on me and tablets are too big for me to bother to carry around all of the time. The rumors are strong now that my carrier (T-mobile USA) is coming out with the Note in July. I'm thinking that might be the best choice for me.

I do not want or need the 3G/4G electronics. One more data plan to pay for? No thanks! Wifi is wide-spread enough for me.
I'm split on the camera. Front-facing is handy for video calls but I don't really need it. OTOH, the idea of facial recognition security is attractive (don't care if it can be faked by a photo, thinking of just if I lose it). In my fantasy/perfect tablet I suppose I'd like a camera on a pivoting rail (can aim front or back) for maximum flexibility. Handwriting recognition and a pen-friendly OS are big deals to me. Needs to be uber-rugged. I want to be able to drop it without damage. Along the same lines, no cheap switches. I've had mechanical switches and slides all go bad on electronics that I use for years. |

* 10.1" superPLS screen (ala Samsung Galaxy Tab)
* ICS (or even better -- Win8) * 10 hour or better battery life * less than 1.5 lbs. (680 grams) * 4:3 screen * dual-core CPU * 4GB of RAM * WiFi * Bluetooth * SDHC or mSDHC card slot * USB or mUSB * front-facing camera (optional) * rear-facing camera (mandatory) * satellite GPS * less than $300 US The Star Walk astronomy app on my friends iPad makes me drool and you need the GPS and a rear-facing camera for those astronomy apps. And I just don't like widescreen tablets. But I'm not a fan of Apple nor will I shell out $500-$700 for a tablet so I guess all I can do is dream. Last edited by gastan; 06-29-2012 at 08:51 PM. |

ahhh another great use for the rear cam. i like the Nexus7 so either it or a Nexus 10 with a rear cam would do nicely. in fact if i could get the GTab 7.7 for $200 with Jelly Bean on board i would be throwing money at someone Last edited by Dulin's Books; 06-29-2012 at 09:05 PM. |
