When I was a child we always had books in the house and my parents read to me every night, but they didn't teach me my alphabet and certainly didn't try to teach me to read - they felt that was better left to the teachers.
I wouldn't have put it that drastically but absolutely agree with everything.

Kids, if nothing else, are extremely adaptable given the right circumstances. Good to hear things are looking up for our newest reader.

My little one will be five in September. He knows some letters and if he asks me about a new one I tell him. But I don't stress to teach him any extra, what will he do at school, sit and be bored? We read every night before bedtime, two books of his choice. Recently every night he asks me for his encyclopedia for kids (4+) which I bought a year ago already. There were musical instruments at one page and I had the idea to present him different music on youtube (on ipad) to listen how they play. That was a good laugh when he couldn't stop dancing to "e viva Espagna" played on accordion. He is really involved and asks me questions about things in that book. Sometimes it is difficult for me as he is bilingual - to develop his language skills (literary his mother's tongue) properly in a (to me) foreign country.

He also "read" some stories to me from another book which was very cute. But I guess he should see ME more with a book rather than ipad (on which he also has magnetic letters, other alphabet apps and interactive books) but as an expat I have limited access to paper books so I don't know how to create that reading image for him. I do not encourage too much playing on ipad or any computer yet, it will come if I want or not (not so much)

Anyway I don't stress. Reading is part of his everyday routine. I will really try to make it stay with him for later.
