I guess they don't want you to reread

An Argentine publisher has discovered that, if you don't read a book when you first get it, you don't tend to buy the author's next book. So he's printing a book in disappearing ink.

I'm not much of a re-reader myself, but I do occasionally flip back to verify some things. Surely there's a bit of grace period before it disappears?

If the book is that bad, at least you have a useful notebook after the ink has faded.

I thought pbooks already had enough planned obsolescence built in. Apparently not. A good way to make sure nobody *rents* that book. |

How does this benefit the publisher and/or author? It would keep me from buying ANY of the author's books!

So if I buy it used or remaindered, all I get is a blank book? Well, that's one way to kill the resale market, I guess. |

The book better not have a retail price if it is going to disappear. I'd pay maybe a buck or so. I do reread some of my books especially a series. I usually rearead the last book before going onto the new one to refresh my memory of what is going on. |

Don't tell the textbook companies. They're already trying to sell self-destructing ebooks. This will only encourage them.

I wouldn't buy that book on principle, so those authors would remain unknown to me - which seems to defeat the whole purpose of the anthology. I feel sorry for the new authors, who seem to be the ones who will lose the most.

I think it's a clever gimmick - it has us talking about it, doesn't it?

In the DVD world, there was a lot of talk, nearly all negative when Circuit City and one of the DVD publishers came out with DVDs that only lasted for a few days after opening, and I think Disney might have dabbled with the concept also. It always flopped, big time. If anything, that publisher will get a negative rap, and people will stop buying any of their books for fear that they will be buying one with disappearing ink.
