I successfully jailbreaked the kindle 3 3G UK version, and installed the patch where you can change the screensaver. No problem.....then I thought I was on a role, and I tried update_fonts_5.1.N_k3gb_install ....and now it says Your Kindle Needs Repair, and does not connect to computer.
Cannot reset by holding the power button, it seems to install the update, and then it says Kindle is about to start, and then goes to Your Kindle Needs Repair. It gives a telephone number and I bought the Kindle 3 last June 2011, so Warranty may be too late? I was thinking if I good open the Kindle and found the memory and some how to to uninstall update_fonts_5.1.N_k3gb_install! help Last edited by peter12345; 06-22-2012 at 01:35 AM. Reason: wrong date i bought the kindle - should be 2011 but wrote 2012 |

So the fonts hack does not work for 5.1.N_k3gb - a warning for others.
So this update should be removed from the official hack page for the fonts thing, though the new font seems to be very similar to the Kindle one. Last edited by peter12345; 06-22-2012 at 06:07 AM. |

If you tell Amazon customer service that you bricked your Kindle trying to install a hack they will not replace it for you. Installing hacks is against their terms of service.

@peter12345: Except I happen to test my stuff before releasing it, and it certainly *doesn't* brick anything under normal circumstances
![]() If you still see the update process on a hard reboot, it *badly* failed to install, that would imply an issue somewhere else... Can't say much without logs, my best guess would be a full temp partition, which should *never* happen under normal circumstances, and shouldn't leave the system in a weird state anyway. More details on exactly what you did/what happened would also probably help... Anyway, try a hard reset to factory defaults: Hold [HOME] after a hard reboot (> ~20 power slide), you should end up on a screen asking you to type RESET to do a reset to factory defaults. Thanks NiLuJe for your reply, but there is no HOME Button on the Kindle 3, there is just the power slide that I have held for one minute, but the same thing happens.
Sorry there is a home button, I must be stupid - I am trying now....it works. thanks. Last edited by peter12345; 06-23-2012 at 06:04 AM. Reason: solved |

Please ask this type of question in the dev forum; I'm moving this thread thither.
Thanks. |

I did install the fonts hack eventually, but then I tried to change the settings font to a cartoon one. And the same thing happenned again, I prefer the lite hack - I will just stick with that.
I was very happy with the chess game, though m player does not work on 3G. |

I did not know this.... Eventually I got the fonts hack to work, it does change the menu and system fonts automatically. But not the book reading format, so I tried the package font package Delicious which worked, though 3 Museo_Slab font packages did not work - so all is well with the Delicious fonts package. Though for the life of me I could not get any of the Kindlets to work. But I am happy with the hacked KIndle 3. I just want to make it warmer like the Sony T1, which is already there and does not need hacking. Last edited by peter12345; 06-25-2012 at 04:21 AM. |

There are some older posts that described using the RESET command like that. This should be added to the Simple Debricking instructions for K3.

@peter12345: Yes, it does change the three font families, including the one used in the mobi reader... Read The Fine Manual on how to use an FT override (most likely bci) to fix the 'broken' fonts.
