We were audible members back when you got 5 books a month for $15. Ah those were the days. My wife regrets ever letting that go now. Our friend is still on that plan. I'm currently trying the $7.49 promo, which is only for new members, but they offered it to me as a returning member. One of the advantages of following Amazon's advice and setting up an Amazon account for my 9-yr-old son's Fire activity was we got join him as a new trial member to Audible and got two free audiobooks. He was nice enough to let his mom pick.... ApK |

Take a look at podiobooks.com. The authors often read their own books, and they are independent authors, so quality is not consistent, but they are free. Nathan Lowell's books are there, read by him, and the later books in his series are only available there. And they are very good. They are usually in about 1/2 hour chunks.

I got the audio of Justin Cronin's The Passage for 1 Audible credit, which was quite a deal, so I do like audible as well. I don't know of any other good sources.

As a member, there are a lot of sales for books for much less than those credits cost me, so I end up buying them outright. My wishlist is overflowing with books that are member priced at $20+ so I know they'll still be a great deal when I do use them, but I'm saving them until I'm ready to listen to the books, just in case they go on sale. (I ended up buying the books outright that I initially signed up to get -- the unabridged Outlander series -- on sale for $5 or $8 each.)

To all you folks sitting on heaps of credits that may expire before you get to them: Audible lets you send credits as gifts to other members, and my birthday is in August. I'm just sayin'.... ApK |

I hang on to my credits, waiting for the "use 4 credits, get $10 deal." I think I have 7 now, so hopefully the offer will come soon.

I was on that plan as well... But I let it go because I didn't listen to audiobooks that much anymore (I always had to walk 15-20 minutes to get to work, and audible books were perfect for that!) I only recently started listening to my books again (when I have to wait for my ride home)

If someone is blind or has certain disabilities, they should check out the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS). They loan out audiobooks free to qualifying members. http://www.loc.gov/nls/ |

Another reason I like Audible - I just won one of the summer sweepstakes prize packs! $500, a Nokia Lumia 900 cell phone and a Samsung Series 7 Tablet! |
