The symptoms you described look to me like something I was experiencing when I was trying to connect to XP through wrong USB slot. Not all of them are equal, though they may look the same. I changed the USB slot I was using, and all went fine from then on.

Now, take your SD card out and insert it into the card reader. Then format the SD card to FAT32. Next, insert the SD card back into the Cybook and cycle the Cybook on and off. That should create the folders on the Cybook. Finally, try using each of the *other* USB ports to connect the Cybook to the PC - with the properly formatted SD card in place. One of them should work. Under XP not all will. Derek |

My experience has been that very often SD cards come with a file system that doesn't work at all reliably with the Gen3.
From your Windows machine, right click on the "SD Card" drive that mounts from the Gen3, select "Format", and reformat the card as FAT32. Then turn off the Gen3, take the card out, turn the Gen3 back on, and put the card back in. The Gen3 will recreate the required folders on the card and operation should (hopefully) be trouble-free from then on. |

Thanks to you all.
I don't see a format option when I right click on the card. But part of my problem may be that until now I have inserted the card in the Cybook before connecting it. I'll try Harry's advice and connect the Cybook to the computer and then insert the card into the Cybook to see if a format option appears when I right click on it. Failing that I'll look at getting a reader. I have already tried another USB slot on my Thinkpad, and it does seem more reliable than the one I first tried. Regards, Alex |

just curious - do you need to use the card already? i have a couple hundreds books on my cybook without a card and it's not even a quarter full.

if you have the new version of the gen3, it has enough internal memory to hold enough books to keep you going for a good while. All the SD card would do in that case is eat the battery.

Thanks again to all. I've worked out a way to format the card to FAT32, and all seems to be well.
I was advised on another forum to use the card in preference to the Cybook itself, so that's what I've done. I didn't think of the disadvantages like using up the battery. Is it likely to be significant drain? Regards, Alex |

Not really significant, no. If, like me, you keep your Gen3 fully charged by connecting it to the PC for a few minutes a day it's really not an issue. If you want to keep it permanently "on" and maximise battery life, you'll probably get a few hours more life if you don't use a card. No big deal either way.

Do you have any support for that the SD cards eat battery in any noticeable way. According to spec of cards it does not matter compared to the total power consumption. Have you done experiments so you have other information since you often mention SD cards and battery drain on the Cybook. The Sony is a totally different machine and you should not guess what holds for the Cybook based on your experience with the Sony.

assuming that you also store your books on your computer, did the folks on the other forum mention why they felt it was an advantage to store your books on the card rather than the cybook?

With a new Gen3 with 512meg, I can see no advantage to storing on an SD care vs. internal memory.
And to run an SD card, it does take power to do so. So, yes using a SD card with a Gen3 will decreased the battery life between charges. How much, I cannot say. But given that the newest firmware has less battery life then 583, I'd not want to lose any more with an SD card that you don't actually need. |

The only benefit that occurs to me is that if you're writing to the SD card rather than internal memory, you're less likely to corrupt the internal disk and get an unbootable machine.

I'd love to be able to display books by author then by title. Is there any way of doing that? I can do it with mobipocket reader on my computer, but not on the Cyook. Regards, Alex |
