Yes, we usually say, "It's not the hardware or the software that's faulty, it's the software sitting in front that's got a problem."

I prefer sh&!load as it translates well across all domains. Every poops (yes that's a book) and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Why? And besides... isn't software already taken?

I've come across it several times. But I've always thought it could be confused/conflated with any tools necessary to do wet-"work."

Nah... when it comes to terminology pertaining to machine, code, and (l)user ... I prefer hard-, soft-, and meatware.

Ask someone who's offended and you might get a reason... I neither know nor care... just reporting the news... and nothing but the news...

You don't seem to get my point. The CD doesn't do the sampling. There is just that standard that is saying that the music on a CD has been recorded with a sampling rate of 44100 Hz. The rate was chosen because it is the minimum necessary to recover the 20 kHz analog signal.

The people supporting this theory consider our universe to be the output of a simulated reality. I was talking about actual reality being analog.

We'll use some analogies, but it is hard to predict what analogies might be meaningful in the future. Those you suggest depend on people having significant knowledge about the inside of a computer. That might be true, or it might not. Personally, I think people that over time, people will have less knowledge of the inside of the computer, as it becomes less accessible. Much of our technology we just use. Consider TVs, when TVs were full of tubes, many people could open them up and repair them. A modern HDTV is much harder to fix, you can't just do down to Radio Shack.

Exactly: It depends too much upon the vagaries of culture. All idioms are like that. Predicting them is too much work; just let culture and posterity figure it out, and use it if you like.

Personally I prefer "A few bits short of a byte".

Where I work, we refer to these as PEBKAC, PICNIC, or EBUAC. We like variety.
