Let's not forget the people who text, talk on their phones or check for updates on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Not just talk... but TALK IN THEIR OUTDOOR VOICES LIKE NOBODY ELSE IS EVEN IN THE SAME ROOM. "LOOK AT ME!! I'M TAKING A CALL... IN A RESTAURANT!!"

Cats... I've been playing a game (Deus Ex! the most awesome game ever made!) and while dogs are the loud ones, the world will go to the cats. They're the Illuminati's successors...

Oh shoot, now I shared something with you all! But it's not about reading, but gaming. Does that count? (I'm reading a book, based on the Deus Ex universe, though...)

I like some parts of the social media. I do not want stuff popping up while I am reading but I do enjoy reading what others think of a book and to put my 2 cents in about a book I have read.

Done - I will chalk that up to a social reading experiment. What has science done!

Or, was it a social comment? was it peer pressure commenting? Oh this is a Pandora's Box of socially inept reading.

Preferably discussing either their very private relationship troubles or their last medical examination in vivid details.

So I work for a tech company in Berlin called [deleted]. You can find us here: [deleted]. We're focussing on making reading social and shareable. What's your opinion on such a thing?

Andrew Keen recently said that 'social reading' signifies the end of the world, as we can't enjoy the solidarity that comes with it anymore. However, I view it as a fresh take on reading.

For more context on how 'social' is incorporated, take a look at [deleted].
Thoughts?
No, no, and again no.

We aren't a hive. We're indivuals, and need to stay as such.

To me, (and remember its just my opinion) there is already too much 'social interaction' going on. Facebook, Blogs, chat rooms, constant updates on news channels, the latest who did what to who and when they are expecting, in detail on celebrities........

I no longer watch mainstream TV, and just go to a few few sites online.

The very last thing I want to do is share my reading.

Perhaps that makes me on the antisocial side.

So be it.

And by the way.................

Welcome to MobileRead.

We aren't a hive, but we aren't alligators either. The complete hermit is a true rarity. Reading has always had a social element, to some extent or another. If it didn't, this website and others like it wouldn't exist. But when it gets down to the actual task of reading, that's solitary. People will often be eager to discuss the book, but I don't think reading itself is likely to change.

I use Facebook, but I use to keep connected with actual friends - people I actually know - rather than with so-called Facebook friends. Social networking often isn't very social at all. Being in the same room, sitting at the same table, that's social. Having on-line friends that you've never met and never will, not as much.

I don't have that impression from the thread. For example I'm happy to discuss the books that I've read but not the books that I'm in the process of reading.

MR is social but serious about it.
Show me another forum cultivating threads like the "heard about" or the "candle". What most people here reject is the web 2.0 typical attention grabbing snippet typing.
