First rule of internautics: download only the free stuff that interests you, otherwise you end up spending the money you "saved" on additional storage units.

I wonder if the people who are so against illegal downloading of materials are 'honest' when it comes to potentially embarrassing material like pornography.

Do you people legally purchase every nudie picture/video you view on the internet?

I'm guessing you good moral people don't view icky material like that anyways so it doesn't matter .....
This made me giggle But it's true.. everyone lies at some point in their life. or does something dishonest at least once

I think that basically as iTunes has shown, once you give customers the ability to get what they want at a reasonable price, piracy becomes a non issue. Think about it. How much is music piracy in the news these days? You have sites such as iTunes and Amazon that make it easy to buy non DRM music at a reasonable price. You have other services, such as Pandora, that let you listen to music that you want to listen to, either on a subscription basis or advertiser supported. Yet very few people talk about piracy of music these days. I'm sure it goes on, but for the most part, it's a non-issue.

I would imagine that once the movie and book industry let go of their old business models and move to business models that match their customers desires better, the concern about piracy will start to drift to the back burner.

Imagine if you would, if netflix or someone like them had every movie over a year old available on line? Or "channels" that specialized in various movie types (western, action, romance, etc...) that provided the same service in their gendre? Wouldn't that be popular?

Imagine ebooks shops that were similarly positioned (an ebook shop that specialized in romance, in SF/F. in whichever gendre you want). Or services that let you download and read books on the NY times bestseller list for a set subscription. The possibilities are endless.

Very well said and I agree. Give people what they want at a reasonable price and piracy don't be a huge issue

I agree with this statement but some people have that 'hoarders' mentality when it comes to digital material.

Before the flooding in Thailand, hard drives were basically free and internet speeds are increasing generally throughout the world.

My ISP is working on releasing (albeit in a very limited area) gigabit fiber to home service for $70/month. I'd say that most major cities in the U.S will have similar type connections within 5-7 years. Then will piracy increase when people want to take 'advantage' of that speed?

Yep, including the world of finance, corporations, industrialists and to stay on the theme of this forum, publishers ...
Oh wait, they do it every day and on a massive scale to boot.
But never mind that, what is important is to shame the individual pirates who dare download the stuff on the net and by doing so, they dare not conform with the establishment and its system which makes it clear that poors must stay poor, make minimum wages by working all day for the rest of their lives and whenever they have some free time, buy and spend their hard earned cash to make the rich wealthier. I mean if people starts freethinking and questioning the system, what is to become of civilization.

The world today is all about money. The rich want more, and the poor want to have whatever they can get. Working 60+ hours a week just to get by and on the odd chance they can afford an iTune or an ebook once a month is always a bonus to them. I'm not rich, and I'm not poor. I'm a middle class working man that works hard to support his family. I try to get my kids everything they want, but sometimes it's just not possible. They aren't old enough yet to understand why Daddy can't buy them every single thing, but I hope one day they respect me for trying my best to put food on the table and clothes on their back. People that basically "Steal" entertainment aren't right, but I can understand why they do it. I am against it of course, but the economy is so poor that if people don't get some form of entertainment they would be a mess.
