I read.

There are a lot of advantages to ebooks -- starting with convenience. Buying a new paper book is probably my last option. First, I look for used copies (I'm a big fan of a nearby used book store!) and then I shop the remainders. I also buy books at local thrift stores, but there's no way to know in advance what they might have.

That can also be a disadvantage for some of us.

I still buy them. If I'm buying something I like to have something physical to hold - ergo, I still buy books. Although generally not at full price... My T1 is reserved for free to download, out of copyright stuff. I can't see anything wrong with buying real books...
I consider eBooks to be real books too, but other than that I share this sentiment. I find a lot of books cheap at Amazon, and my jetBook Lite I use for freebies and PD items.

I don't see why "Dead Tree Books" and "Memory Hole Books" have to be enemies.

It would be nice if a free ebook download were offered with the purchase of the hardcover. It would cost the publisher nothing in terms of marginal cost.

What's the big deal? Does owning a reader prevent you from buying paper books? I buy quite a lot of paper books, especially reference books.

A few companies were doing that four or five years ago, providing an electronic copy, but you had to send a form and get a disk via mail. I gather it was all too hard as I have not seen ads in any of the bookshops that I frequent. They would effectively have to issue serial numbers with each book - like software - for it to work. Probably too costly.

Or use Baen's method and include a CD with the entire backilist for that author, multiformat & DRM free (Admittably, only for a handfull of books)

a dead tree book? ewwww how gauche!

i bought a book from an indie author that included a code for a free ebook copy. all one had to do was register your email address on his site and the code from the book and he'd send you a copy. i don't know how that would work in retail where people could just rip it off but maybe that could be some type of online retailer/publisher bonus offer. i know b&m book sellers would have a conniption over it but alas.

I really want to read Joseph Stiglitz's "The Price of Inequality". The ebook is $14.99 and the pbook is $15.92. If I get the pbook, I can lend it to my friend, and my husband (both of whom I think would enjoy it). When they get done with it, I can donate it to the library.

On the other hand, buying a pbook could lead to unintended consequences. If too many people decide to deviate from the electronic format, publishers win. I guess the answer for that is to just not buy the book at all. But I really want to read it!

Does anyone else actually feel guilty if they consider buying a book in dead tree format, if it is available in ebook format and doesn't cost more than the pbook? Or is it just me?

P.S. Anyone read it yet? It is based on his Vanity Fair article, which is available online.
I never feel guilty for buying any book. But the reasons you mention wouldn't stop me from buying the ebook, especially the husband part. Why couldn't you buy the ebook and let him read it? And the friend part, loan him the ebook. And if he doesn't have an ereader, well, convert him! If you can't trust him if you ask him to delete the book after he has read it, do you think you can trust him with a pbook and getting it back?

DRM is a non-issue, that should be removed ASAP anyway. And no, I don't feel guilty about removing that either. I don't feel guilty if I remove a virus from my PC neither...

All books are real whether paper or ebook. The biggest difference is one takes up limited physical space, the other one doesn't. I'll take the one that doesn't take up physical space.
