Thought I'd give the final in Dean Koontz's Frankenstein trilogy a try, The Dead Town, just to see how it all ends. Not sure why, as I find the "cutesy" banter between the main (married) protagonists hugely irritating, and much of the characterisation annoying, but there's obviously something in there that has kept me coming back for each new release in the series.

Well, so much for a break from Urban Fantasy! The July Baen eBook Bundle (aka, Webscriptions) released, and I realized that Elfhome, the Wen Spenser in there, is part of a series I've enjoyed a lot (Tinker), so I think I'll go back and re-read to catch up and then start in on this one. But I'll finish off Kill My Darling first. It's going well and I'm enjoying it.

It definitely advanced the story line, but by the time I finished it, I wasn't at all sure it was worth it. Makes me leery of starting the next one, When the Bough Breaks, (co-written by Holly Lisle and Lackey but apparently not very much of Lackey if Wheels of Fire was any indication.)
WTBB is actually a lot better than Wheels of Fire (the late Mark Shepherd's writing, unfortunately, just wasn't that great to begin with) and it's got some fun moments. But it does tend to linger on some of the abuse stuff (apparently the co-author used to be some sort of paramedic/emergency room nurse who saw unfortunate things), so I'd advise just skimming to refresh yourself on the story if you have to (it gets a vague mention in Chrome Circle, but is not as important to that story as WoF was in setting up Joe's backstory).

As for me, I'm currently umpty dozen books into the reading/commenting deficit. But the last couple have been continuing volumes in Mary Anna Evans' Faye Longchamp archaeological mystery series out from Poisoned Pen Press, of which the 1st is currently free along with a couple of other 1st-in-series (DRM-free, but not available in all regions), and others on special discount sale, which I went and bought.

So far they've been pretty entertaining and take Faye to various sites and digs around the US so the scenery is varied (and not too many murders happen in one suspiciously homicidal place).

Maybe a bit of contrivance in how some of the plot threads turn out, but a good mix of history and culture and modern archaeological/anthropological approach to them, and starting with the 3rd book, there's a Q&A section with the author in the back which gives more notes and details about the hist/arch stuff she wrote and why she wrote it that way, which I like to see. Also, Evans has been weaving in faux-historical correspondence and folk stories and such into the narrative, which is a nice touch.

I'll comment more on them when I've finished the 6th, but for now consider them recommended if you think you might like archaeological mysteries with world-building bonuses and a certain touch of contrivance in dramatic plot resolutions.

Just found out that the surge protector that I plugged my K3 and KFire into, was not plugged in.

I have to find a pbook to read until they are charged up. I'm trying to decide between Michael Crichton's Pirate Latitudes and Clive Cussler's Medusa. My son left some books for me when he was last here. Maybe, Cemetery Dance by Preston & Child? They all seem to have so-so reviews. I hate to start something new when I haven't finished my other books and nothing in the book case sounds good for a reread.

Well, I suspect it would have to be better. I'd only give WoF about a 2 to 2.5 out of 5. And that only because I like the overall premise/series.

Hmmm. Well, maybe after I've got a few others on my TBR out of the way. It just got a big bump from the July Baen Monthly Book Bundle (and the back books I need to read to catch up. ) I do enjoy the SERRA series as a whole, so I'll likely circle back around.

You cannot use your K3 or Fire while they are being charged? If that's true, that is a major flaw (IMHO).

Not if I want to read outside on the patio or take it with me to my parent's house to read while watering the trees.

So now they are charged up, but I have started The Burglar in the Library by Lawrence Block (in pbook) and want to finish it.

If you take it to your parent's house, you bring the charger and cable and charge away. I've done that before. But for going outside, the cable probably isn't long enough.

I just finished the 2nd and 3rd Sandman Slim books, the 4th Iron Druid book, and the 3rd of Harry Connolly's 20 Palaces novels. I'm suddenly between books and digging through Calibre.

Speaking of Harry Connolly, has anyone read Soldiers of a Dying God?

I do so love the Bernie Rhodenbarr series. I just wish Mr Block would write another one. I am currently in the middle of his book on writing technique Telling Lies for Fun & Profit. Very good stuff.
