2 of the 3 settled publishers agreed to pay $52 million in restitution (applicable to USA).

The case in Canada, Australia and EU is still ongoing.

Both B&N and the Author's Guild are objecting to the settlements. They may still be approved, but who knows?

I.e. don't count your chickens before they've hatched.

Read the above posts. There are NOT going to be price reductions until the court has approved the settlement, and new contracts are negotiated. This isn't going to happen overnight - I suspect we're talking about several months before anything changes.

In the absence of agency pricing, there is a return to wholesale pricing, which is almost agency pricing anyway.

The idea that the price "over the whole line of books" stayed the same (or even possibly went down slightly) is what I consider the anecdotal (actually, I should say irrelevant) claim. The simple fact is that the books that sell the most (hence "Best Seller") increased in in price. It's hard to lend any other numbers very much credence.

"When diluted with the statistics of all the books that we just don't sell very damn many of... the effect of Agency Pricing seems to be far less noticeable."

Well.... duh.

I buy primarily "mid-range" books - old books by reasonably well-known authors, mostly in the mystery/detective genre. Eg, Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Ruth Rendell, Dorothy L. Sayers, etc. I honestly haven't noticed agency pricing affecting the price of these; they're mostly in the £4-5 range, which I consider reasonable for an eBook.

I buy mainly new stuff so it hit me hard. There used to be topics tracking the prices at Amazon. The anti-boycott folks pointed out that 90% of the books available were under $9.99. I don't know of anyone who was checking to see if those books saw a price change. It did seem like there was an increase in the price of books in a series as many of them became the same price as the paperbacks or a bit more expensive. But that is anecdotal on my part.
