frahse, I agree with you, but I think it happened many decades ago. A hundred years ago there were newspaper writers like GK Chesterton, but I think that for the past, say, forty years, most of the American columnists have been too partisan for the public to put much faith in their musings.

Getting (sort of ) back to the original topic, one way to chart the steady decline of the American newspaper is to take a look at the funny pages. Where once great art thrived in the form of full-page illustrations by the likes of Winsor McCay, Alex Raymond and Hal Foster, we now have nothing but gag strips packed four or more on a page.

I've been keeping track on my Amazon wishlist for the past two months of the number of new reprints of works by Raymond and Foster, as well Milton Caniff and Carl Barks. There's quite a bit in the pipeline!

Remember that saying "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth." There is a reason they say that.

An advantage of "OPINION PROGRAMS" is that you get to hear either side arguing and bashing with each other. Then I believe that you can get a little closer to that elusive quality called truth.

I kind of like that other saying "... and in this corner wearing the red, white and blue stripped trunks is ..."
You mentioned something in the Fox News/E-reader thread about the different sources you read but you are very much the exception. Most people pick one side or the other and then accept what is said too quickly, without bothering to investigate further.

Opinion has a place, it just too often devolves into a verbal slap-fest with neither side telling the truth and trying to score cheap points off the other. Remember CNN's Crossfire? With good guests, you used to be able to learn something but 90% of the time it was just bickering that turned me away from both sides.

I watched O'Reilly for a while, Keith Olbermann as well. Both just made me angry at the other side, making me forget that there are good, well-meaning people on both sides of the spectrum. I don't think that contributes much to the national dialogue.

Sorry for the rant, maybe I need to start posting in the politics thread.

Back to the topic.

I haven't subscribed or paid for a newspaper in well over a decade. I have a subscription to Time Magazine, because I prefer to read the in-depth stuff while relaxing in my comfy chair and even a tablet is heavy when compared to a magazine. Newspaper websites are great for quick news, I surf the Guardian (good for culture + sports as well), the NY Times (regional "back-home" news), and occasionally the Washington Post or Christian Science Monitor. + Blogs, mostly left and sometimes right.

The Ottawa "Citizen" announced today that it will stop publishing its Sunday edition as of July 15. Ironically, it was announced on its website initially (http://www.ottawacitizen.com/sports/...665/story.html). I first heard about it on tonight's CBC evening newscast. Presumably I will read about this in tomorrow's "Citizen".

In a way, it isn't very surprising. The Sunday readership was lower, and there wasn't much by way of advertising; it was a very thin edition.

The website article mentions that staff will be down to about 80 from 200 a decade ago - a sign of the times.

There's a podcast I listen to called Left, Right & Center that is sort of like CNN's old Crossfire but it doesn't devolve into shouting matches. It hasn't been as good since their resident righty Tony Blankley passed away a few months ago but I still enjoy it.

most all my news is done online as well, for one i dont have to be held hostage for the weather or sports anymore on tv and no more commercials, and on newspapers i dont have to worry about getting ink on my hands before i go to work, as well as fight with the vatious newspaper delivery person thats consitantly late. i get it when i want it and how i want it and for cheap or free.

Tony Blankley died? I used to watch the McLaughlin Group occasionally, didn't agree with him much but he was intelligent and often witty. RIP

US newspapers have been grappling with a steep drop in print advertising revenue, steadily declining circulation and the migration of readers to free news online. But more newspapers are developing models for paid online subscriptions or apps for tablets or phones.
If any of the online news sources I read erect a paid wall, I'll quite reading them and find another.

Bottom line: I absolutely refuse to pay for my news!

Hmmm, monkeys are cheap. Ergo, I must also be a monkey. Fully agreed with the above.

Must buy bananas. Need money for that.

I remember this aging silverback always telling us youngsters:
