It doesn't. Books are only indexed when you add them. After that, there is no additional work done.

Can I use the Update_Kindle_4.0.1_B00E.bin file to overwrite the /dev/mmcblk0p1? Or I need az iso file?

Except for the work done VERIFYING the indexes as shown in the log files, as NiLuJe said previously.

But how much work is that? Indexing books uses a lot of power, and can really drain the battery. I currently have around 1000 books on my Kindle, and haven't noticed any detectable shortening of the battery life as the number of books has grown.

It probably takes a LOT less energy to check existing index links, than to exhaustively search raw text and then to sort and index things to build a new index, but "no additional work" is an absolute decaration which is very hard to prove and very easy to disprove (as are most absolutes). It is always safer to insert a bunch of "weasel words" like lawyers and politicians are fond of, to avoid speaking in absolutes.

And it does imply a full directory lookup of the documents folder, and, as we all know, disk I/O is expensive, even on a flash drive .

If you happen to have an empty kindle next to a Kindle with ~1K items, the slight difference in reactivity on wakeup is noticeable, especially in certain parts of the UI (collections, notes).

And if you check the CPU usage with top/htop, you'll notice that it'll churn @ 100% CPU for quite a while, compared to the 'empty' kindle.

I did a test with the old KF8 conversion that I found in this post. I believe that file is supposed to exhibit the line height, black page problem on the Kindle Touch with 5.1.0. It worked fine on the K4 NT with 4.1.0.

The root password is either fionaXXX (XXX is from your serial number) or the root password is mario, as stated at that web page. Did you try mario?

Did you type the serial in all UPPERCASE at that web page? It is case-sensitive.

Unless you changed the password, default passwords use a DES hash, which only uses the first 8 characters (fionaXXX), but you can type more than 8 if you want when logging in and and the extra characters will be ignored.

When you change a password, it uses a salted MD5 hash, which is much more secure and uses all the characters typed.

Try logging in as framework:mario, and then to "cat /etc/shadow" and report the contents of that text file so we can crack the password with John the Ripper. The "fiona wordlist" is in the Index Tools wiki (linked to the Master Index sticky thread). Although it seems unlikely that amazon would change a password and nobody else reported that problem (so far), it would be interesting to find out what the new password is.

It should be safe to share your shadow file contents, but if you wish to, you can PM it to me...

P.S. The framework login is VERY limited, and cannot do much that is useful besides displaying the shadow file.

The purpose of this thread is to discuss the 4.1 firmware from the viewpoint of the normal user. Please confine "developer" discussions to the dev sub-forum.

Thank you.
