Love to see a pic of your setup. I just went to two monitors at home... when I got the iMac which has a built in 20inch wide screen and I hooked my Dell 20inch LCD to that as a second monitor. I am a developer and having more monitors is as you say to limit windows switching... especially with the IDE/Editor, debugger, terminal window, browser/app, spec, reference material all open at once.

Do you use synergy by any change so you can control all your PCs with one mouse and keyboard?

BTW: I always wanted to be a lawyer but to late in life to pursue it now.

Thanks for the window into your cat filled life.

My workshop (in the garage) looks a bit like an electronics store most of the time. When I decided to sell the California place and consolidate everything ... I hooked all four up and decided I liked that much better. It's been four monitors ever since. I assume you seen these?

I have a dual head Matrox card in my desktop, hooked up to a single monitor. When I find a flat panel 19" display that will display in my preferred 1600x1200 resolution, two of them will replace my current 19" CRT. I can't go dual monitor now because I don't have room on the desk for two big mutha CRTs.

I'm not sure your going to find that in 19inch. But the Dell 2001FP (example http://raleigh.craigslist.org/sys/739799291.html) is a great monitor. I have the 2000FP... the same LCD panel as the 2001, but the 2001 has a much smaller bezel. Do you not want a wide screen aspect ratio instead?

All of the flat scree 19" monitors I've seen so far at my desired price point (about $250) max at 1280x1024 resolution.

No, I want dual monitors. The wide screens generally aren't wide enough.

Before I got into computers, I was a graphic designer and print production guy. I still do occasional print design projects for fun. My ideal monitor would allow me to display two 8.5x11 pages side by side in actual size, and leave room for the program chrome around it.

They've got one of those in our ER. They waste it on looking as radiology scans and labs, though.

Ricky uses multiple monitors on a single machine while I use a single monitor/keyboard/mouse connected to multiple machines. In fact, I have 4 machines connected together. One is my music server (connected to the main audio system), another is used for video/photo editing, the third for firewall/installation purposes, and the final one for database applications and submission of Government documents. I have a 17" LCD monitor connected to this arrangement. On the other desk is this computer that I use for most work. There is a 19" LCD monitor connected here. I am about to install a 22" HD widescreen monitor LCD to the video editing machine. It is sitting in a box on the other side of the room now.

You should check out the monitor of choice with a sample of your work at the resolution you intend to use. LCDs, different to CRTs, have what is called a "native" resolution. They may display other resolutions but fine text (or a lot of it) or artwork may not look as you would want when displayed at a non-native resolution. This is due to way the LCD display mechanism sets up pixels. I have an Optiquest 19" wide screen with native resolution of 1680x1050. This is a bit of an oddball resolution. It will display 1600x1200 but I easily and quickly notice the discrepancies, especially in horizontal lines.

It is my understanding that this is entirely due to the monitor, not the graphics card.

Agreed, and I'll do just that, should I ever find a monitor like what I specified.

My current monitor (an Envision "flat screen" LCD CRT) will do 1600x1280 when I apply the INF file from Microsoft for it, but I see curious behavior when I try to push it that little extra bit. I also run in 16bit mode rather than 32 bit mode most times, as rendering in some apps slows way down in 32 bit mode.

That's my iMac's 20inch resolution. I think that is a standard resolution for wide screen with a 5:4 aspect ratio.
