Cool The Dresden Files - Storm Front

Most fans of The Dresden Files agree (including Jim Butcher) that Storm Front is the weakest of the series, so chances are, if you like Storm Front even a little bit, you'll probably like the rest of The Dresden Files books a lot more. Butcher wrote Storm Front as a college class project where he set out to prove his professor wrong by writing a novel using the rules she'd laid out as a how-to guide. When he showed it to her she said that it was publishable and, lo and behold, it surely was!

What Alan said!

The series really does get better with each book.
My enjoyment of Dresden has placed his other series, Codex Alera, highly on my TBR list.

Cool Dana Stabenow and Edgar Rice Burroughs

Now I'm reading Dana Stabenow's 9th Kate Shugak book, Hunter's Moon.

As for Wool -- I'm just going to have to break down and read this, I think. I've got it on my Kindle, just haven't gotten around to it yet.
I just finished reading Hunter's Moon and enjoyed it a lot! I found it to be exciting, suspenseful, sad and triumphant!

I netflixed the movie, John Carter and watched it on Thursday (right before I went to see Prometheus on Friday). I thought that it was really good and it did not seem to deviate too far from it's source material (Princess of Mars). It's really too bad it didn't do very well at the box office. So, I've decided to re-read Princess of Mars. It's included in MobilRead's Barsoom Omnibus, which contains all 11 Barsoom novels and is available from the Patricia Clark Memorial Library.

Ditto on John Carter. I just saw Prometheus and thought it was quite good.

Just goes to show the differences in tolerance for violence. I have no doubt it was exciting and suspenseful. Certainly sad. But not anything I felt the need to finish. I picked up at the next one and went on.

Meanwhile, still reading Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. Even though I know how it ends. This is a compelling and powerful book that truly makes me understand what high altitude really means. Highly recommended.

Also, just started reading the Audible version of Trading Into Danger by Elizabeth Moon, read by Cynthia Holloway. Not my favourite reader, but definitely a story I've enjoyed and expect to enjoy again. Classed as a "guilty pleasure". No where close to the depth or complexity of the Gird or Palladin stories, but still fun space opera.

Okay thanks, I wasn't planning to read the ones that weren't written by Frank Herbert unless someone said that they were good.

Yep, all 19 of the Kate Shugak Mysteries are set in Alaska as well as all 4 of the Liam Campbell Mysteries and all 3 of her non-series novels. Her scifi series, called the Star Svensdotter Trilogy, includes Alaska Native American characters as well. Here's a link to her website.
