'Tis Sixty Years Ago Today that God Has Saved the Queen

Name the famous poem that this line alludes to-and the poet.

In honor of Queen Bess the Second's jubilee, any good recommendations on on history books or historical fiction dealing with the British monarchy?

There is one recent well regarded novel, "Bring Up the Bodies" on the reign of Henry VIII.
Bernard Cromwell also wrote a series on Alfred the Great , starting with "The Pale Horseman".
Sharon Kay Penman wrote series on Edward 1 and the Wars of the Roses.

Can any one recommend others?

It depends if you like your HF educational or trashy. Personally, I prefer moderately trashy. So I like Phillipa Gregory's "The Other Boleyn Girl" and Allison Weir's "Innocent Traitor."

AS to the quotation- does nobody read AE Housman any more?

At least you are choosing to read about this institution - we had no option, TV radio, newspapers, on and on and on........

I exiled myself to the garden shed, the pub, bed, car...... then people ask you what you are doing/did to celebrate.....more garden, pub, bed, car....

I think it's nearly safe to come out now..................

Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel is a sequel to Wolf Hall, and you should definitely read Wolf Hall first. It deservedly won both the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. They are both written from the point of view of Thomas Cromwell.
