I managed to get it fine as well as every other one in the Jim Stringer series that was available.

Worked for me when I clicked on the title to get to the book's description and then clicked the Add to Library button on that page.

I was seeing it free in searches, but at about 4.79 on the detail page, but now just getting errors completely.

Oh well, I have plenty of other stuff to read, now.... back to downloading!

Incidentally, Faber & Faber have over a dozen low-cost ($2.69 CAD or less) discounted childrens' and adult mystery/thriller titles which are couponable via Kobo.

I think I'll go have a look at the samples later when I'm at home and pick out a few things to buy. The St. Petersburg mysteries look interesting, and so does that other Russian historical detective one.

After this bonanza and at those prices, I'm more than willing to throw a few dollars in Kobo and Faber & Faber's direction even though I'm highly unlikely to ever bother reading much of this stuff.

No, not joking. I have emailed Kobo, but they don't seem very concerned at the moment, although it has got escalated to a level 2 support person and I've now sent along half a dozen sample titles.

Dear Kobo,

I suspect you have a pricing problem on your Faber & Faber ebooks. 173 of them are marked as free.

I couldn't resist adding them to my library, but I haven't downloaded any of them. If this is a mistake rather than a promotion, feel free to remove them from my library again.

regards,

Paul Durrant

I don't think many there actually speak/read English. At least, they don't appear to do so, from the responses I've usually received on email queries and voice calls.

Often, their solution to an "issue" is to yank the book from your library (even if that isn't what you wanted and the price had gone up in the meantime).

In Canada, at least, Faber and Faber titles are discountable with Kobo codes; I have this publisher on my browse list.

They also have legitimate bargains on some titles such as:

A Vengeful Longing by R N Norris - $2.69
In the heat of the St Petersburg summer of 1868, a doctor"s wife and son are found dead, victims of a suspected poisoning. The doctor is arrested, but when further bodies are discovered it sets investigator Porfiry Petrovich on a thrilling and dangerous chase through the dark heart of the city, encountering aristocrats, soldiers, beggars and prostitutes as he hunts down a ruthless and elusive killer.

The Black Monastery by Stav Sherez - $2.69
People used to come to the small Greek island of Palassos for the historic ruins. Now they come to take drugs and party all night. But the horrific ritual murder of a boy in the grounds of an old monastery brings back memories of two similar deaths in the mid-1970s, and of a mysterious cult who once dwelt in the island"s interior, memories the island has tried hard to forget. As Nikos, the police chief who has been persuaded back to his home island for the final years of his career, begins his investigation, two Brits arrive on the island: the bestselling crime writer Kitty Carson, on a break from the pressures of work and her strained marriage, and Jason, an aspiring writer with a secret of his own. When a second body is discovered - further endangering the island"s lucrative tourist trade - these three characters are thrown together, as the gruesome secrets of the past begin to emerge.Brilliantly paced, and featuring a memorable cast of characters, The Black Monastery is a blistering portrait of paradise gone wrong.

There are other titles by Michael Dibdin, Sam Eastland , KO Dahl and Andrew Martin price similarly.

Let us know what Kobo's answer is. I want to know if I should delete the books I downloaded.

That may be unrelated. The entire kobobooks site is down at the moment.

They are gone now. The site is back up and the original link gives no results. So it probably was a mistake after all.

I think it was pretty blooming obvious that it was a mistake . That's why I didn't download any of them.

Yes, the site's back up and the books are no longer free. As HarryT says, a pricing mistake.

But I'd disagree that it was obviously a pricing mistake. It could well have been some kind of special promotion.

Not a matter of "concern", but a simple matter of right and wrong, as far as I'm concerned. If someone's made a mistake which is going to cost them money, the right thing to do is to inform them about it (as Paul very properly did), not take advantage of them. Just my personal opinion. I'd do the same if it were my next door neighbour, or a large company.
