Dearest Wolfie,

That's a good list, but the story I'm thinking of specifically isn't on there. I mean, isn't on there I think.... have you noticed a recurring theme with my posts? I can not remember titles for anything!!!

OK, the short story I'm thinking of has the 2 elderly witches, Granny Something and her more level-headed friend. It's time for the annual Witch Festival, and the local snooty witches tell Granny not to compete because she always wins. They also tell her not to be so mean all the time. Hilarity ensues.

Anybody know the name of this story? And it's Pratchett, right? I actually have this still in paperback in some anthology or another on the shelf.

Hugs & Kisses to All!

a nice quote from one of the Pratchetts books - Monstruous Regiment - comes to mind.

"Most of the vampire families were highly nobby. You never knew who was connected to who... not just connected to who, in fact, but to whom. Whoms were likely to be far more trouble than your common everyday who."

It is "The Sea and Little Fishes" and can be found in Once More * With Footnotes but was originally published in Legends edited by Robert Silverberg.

Personally, I don't think there is such a thing as a bad starting point with Pratchett. While some books might spoil some others, most are pretty stand-alone and don't require much pre-knowlege to figure out what is going on.

If you do want a starting point, there are a few because most books tend to focus on a particular set of characters and there is a starting poing for those particular characters.

Rincewind - The Colour Of Magic (which even Terry himself doesn't recommend people start with.)
Vimes and the Watch - Guards! Guards!
The Witches - Equal Rites
Death - Mort
Moist - Going Postal

Then there is "Small Gods" and "Pyramids", which are pretty much standalone.

BTW, here is a link to a decent visual guide to the books and what the order is.

Hm. The angst-o-meter seems to be climbing, rather than falling. Perhaps I should change the title to something completely different... no, must resist using editorial powers frivolously....

[Resorts to Higher Authority]

No, no, no!! See, as an "outsider" (not previously involved in this discussion, and coming late to the party) I can see that Ms Armadillo is having too much *FUN* persuading others of how bad she feels. You mustn't rain on her pity party; a damp (or drowned) pity party is truly pitiful. One can be having such fun being sorry for oneself --- and being hit by a deluge of water just spoils all that fun.

RM is just pulling everybody's chain ... getting people to feel sorry for her! (P.S. RM -- I love the armadillo - specially the flirty blinking eyes!)

P.P.S. I also love Terry Pratchett's stuff. I collected much of it (paperback) and need to get back to it. Someday. The Kindle (and the cross stitch) are too inviting just now.

But would she enjoy her pity-party so much if I wasn't constantly looking worried and shaking the angst-o-meter?
